Tech emporium Amazon has launched into video game development in what appears to be a long-term project. The beginnings of this relationship date back to 2012, with the creation of the Amazon Appstore, with mobile games, and in 2014 the company announced that it was entering the development of consoles. Two years later, in 2016, it announced the first three games: Crucible, a battle for survival in an alien world in which viewers watching the game on Twitch could interfere with the game; New World, a multiplayer open world with a strong political component and Breakaway, an action game with two sides of four players each, a kind of MOBA designed for Twitch.

Since then, Amazon Studios projects have had mixed fortunes: Breakaway was canceled and Crucible was last known to have taken over the reins of the project in 2017 by Louis Castle, creator of Command & Conquer. Of those great initial projects, the only one that seems to have followed the path that had been marked from the beginning is New World that we have now been able to test. At this time the episodic transmedia The Grand Tour Game was also announced based on the program of the same name that Amazon broadcasts, of which the first chapter is already available.

Create stories for the player to discover

According to Gilmore, the sandbox spirit is basic to the studio; There will be no NPCs that give missions, nor a main story, but the player who wishes will be able to investigate in the lore that will be distributed throughout the game world, but not scripted scenes. "We are not going to tell the player stories, but to create stories for him to discover. They can be in a monument, in a diary... the players will have multiple options to join the different stories of this site, but they are the ones who will create his own story", Gilmore tells us.

What there is is a plot justification for the existence of the game world and the arrival of the player. New World is set in the 17th century in which there is a continent of which nothing is known to which the player arrives, along with other adventurers, with the promise that it is a land of abundant wealth. But as soon as we step on the ground we realize that it is not what was promised and, as we get to know new locations we discover that there are remains of some ancient civilization and that there are residues of evil, some kind of corruption. In this abrupt way we came to the conclusion that if the rest of the world did not know anything about that continent it is because no one has returned to tell about it.

From the beginning it is clear that the environment, although beautiful, is not welcoming. We disembark on the beach with a dirty and somewhat frayed T-shirt and pants as the only accessory, and we have to collect stone and wood to build the necessary tools, which also deteriorate with use.

In these first minutes the game is very similar to a survival game; you have to build practically everything you need to cut wood, meat and make fire. The bonfire serves to manufacture and also as a save point, so we will constantly be destroying the previous one to manufacture a new one and not have to return from far away in case we die. It is also typical of survival games the fact that you have to eat and drink to recover life faster. The water is filled in any stream and the food is obtained by hunting and cooking what is obtained with different herbs that we are also collecting.

The habit makes the monk

The freedom of the player goes to the extreme that he is not tied to a specific class or function. If the guild you belong to is highly specialized, you can decide to be a blacksmith, a trapper, a builder... but nothing is final. There are also no classes, and it is the accessories that we carry that mark the role of tank, dps or healer. If you combine different clothes and weapons, you can have a hybrid role, each one can choose what they feel most comfortable with or go best on each occasion.

After the assault, I decided to investigate the map and found various villages full of corrupted beings, some more disembodied and dangerous than others. The characters had very high levels and wore good equipment and I was almost always in a group, which made progress easier, but even so I encountered a couple of enemies at different points, one was carrying a flaming sword and another was a sorceress, difficult to kill, but the most intense moment was when, suddenly, a giant corrupted bear appeared out of nowhere that quickly wiped out the entire group. This new world seems to give little respite to those who venture through it.

Great graphics and a deep manufacturing system

The graphics of the game look really good. The settings are beautiful and the map is quite large, the amount of vegetation is amazing, with lush bushes and flowers everywhere. The interface surprises with the magnificent combination of utility and cleanliness. The artistic design is very successful and attractive; we loved some suits inspired by the protective ones used by doctors in the plague of the black plague.

The manufacture of objects, food, armor and weapons, with different tiers, is very deep but you always understand the options that exist and what is needed in each case, it is a complete and clear interface. There are sets for multiple options, a section to build what is necessary in the collection of resources, the blacksmith, the construction, alchemy potions, food cooking that provide different abilities...

What I think of the game after playing

New World is in a very solid state. There are some bugs here and there, and when it comes to the graphic section, you can see that Amazon GAme Studios still has work ahead of it, but it is surprising how well all its mechanics work, especially the combat system, where a fluid fluidity is breathed unusual in the genre. With such a promising base, and if it follows this same path, New World should be in the crosshairs of any lover of MMOs, sandboxes and RPGs.
