A Goalless El Clasico - Match Review

The news of an El Clasico fixture comes with great excitement and anticipation from both players of Barcelona FC and Real Madrid, as well as their fans worldwide. This fierce soccer battle has raged between these two teams for so long, and they've thus far met a total of 276 times (243 competitive matches and 33 exhibition matches).

El Clasico is known for recording a lot of goals, making fans go wild in celebration, most times, celebrating in mockery of the opponent. Barcelona has won the most of El Clasico encounters (115 wins), Madrid winning 99. The largest El Clasico win was recorded in a Copa Del Rey match on 19th June 1943, when Real Madrid humiliated Barça 11-1.

Despite several attempts at goal from both teams in the match yesterday, both defenses were at alert, and none of the shots fired hit the target, and the match ended goalless. Before the encounter of last night, the last El Clasico match that ended goalless was on the 23rd November 2002. That's 17 years ago. That's how rare a goalless match is between these two sides.

The closest attempt to breakthrough in the last match was Gareth Bale's goal, which was disqualified by VAR after Mendi, who created the assist, was found in an offside position. It was a beautiful attempt, neatly crafted, and expertly converted, but was turned down first by the assistant referee's flag, then corroborated by VAR.

Maybe it was the hunger for possession, or just the intensity of the match, there were too many inappropriate tackles from both sides, necessitating too many yellow cards, especially in the second half. A total of eight players were shown the yellow card. At a point, I was expecting to see someone get a second yellow and be sent off.

Match Highlights

There is something about El Clasico that makes both teams put in all their best. Real Madrid performed much more than they've done in recent times when they've played against other clubs in the La Liga.

Overall, it was a great game, beautiful shots, accurate passes, both long and short. At the end, it's a goalless El Clasico. Both teams now less the table with 36 points, but separated only by goal difference.
