I have read studies that show Metformin extends life span, and more importantly, extends healthspan, the absence of chronic disease during life.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34421827/

"...its ability to reduce early mortality associated with various diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline and cancer, metformin can improve healthspan thereby extending the period of life spent in good health. Based on the available evidence we conclude that the beneficial effects of metformin on aging and healthspan are primarily indirect via its effects on cellular metabolism and result from its anti-hyperglycemic action, enhancing insulin sensitivity, reduction of oxidative stress and protective effects on the endothelium and vascular function."

Thanks!

Yep. That's intriguing. Many non diabetics are trying to get their hands om Metformin for that reason.

But I wonder about the longevity effects of the alternatives suggested by the doctor , and why studies are not being funded in the same way.

Then there is the "side" effects. Aoparently Berberine is pretty much just as good.

Maybe the best plan is to cut the sugar and refined carbs in the first place ?

"...the best plan is to cut the sugar and refined carbs in the first place ?"

I have also done that. Berberine does appear to reduce blood sugar, but studies have not shown it to have similar tonic affect on senescence and aging, at least not that I have seen.

"The history of metformin goes back hundreds of years. In Europe, the medicinal herb Galega officinalis was popular for digestive health and to treat urinary problems and other ailments. In 1918 a scientist discovered that one of its ingredients, guanidine, could lower blood sugar."

Metformin is derived from an herb, not some laboratory created artificial chemical.

As to why other nutraceuticals don't have the same effect, every specific compound is different, just as is every person. This is why some people suffer harmful side effects from different compounds.
