[ESP/ENG] El Mata Gigantes de la Copa del Mundo Qatar 2022/ The Giant Killer of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

1.Alemania: 36 puntos (4 oros, 4 platas y 4 bronces)

2.Brasil: 33 puntos (5 oros, 2 platas y 2 bronces)

3.Italia: 27 puntos (4 oros, 2 platas, 1 bronce)

4.Argentina: 19 puntos (2 oros, 3 platas)

5.Francia: 15 puntos (2 oros, 1 plata, 2 bronces)

ENGLISH

One of the lessons of this World Cup is that the predictions have not been fulfilled, as many of us thought, and that there has been a rebellion of many little ones who, like David, have left many Goliaths in their wake.

killsgiants

One of those giants that has succumbed in this competition is none other than Germany, one of the countries that has won the most World Cup titles, the team with the most medals in general and one of the world's soccer powers.

Another team that is among the greatest in the world and that has left such a good sensation in this competition that has also been in trouble and for a moment was out of the World Cup, when Costa Rica was winning by two goals to 1 to Germany, before Germany turned the game around, is the Spanish team.

Both giants were decapitated by the same samurai: Japan.

Another important element is that Spain and Germany have two of the most important leagues on the planet and Japan's league does not have the quality or the presence of the most important players in the world.

Let's go to the facts

World champions defeated by Japan.

Germany

In the FIFA historical ranking, the team with the best overall performance is Brazil, not only because it has won the most World Cups, but also because it has outperformed the other teams and is the only one that has participated in all the World Cups.

Now, if we make a score to determine the country with the highest number of points achieved in World Cups, Germany would occupy that place. To get an idea of the above: if we do the following operation and give the country that has won the World Cup 5 points, 3 points to the country that has achieved the silver medal and 1 point to the country that won the bronze medal, this would be the TOP 5 of all time:

  1. Germany: 36 points (4 golds, 4 silvers and 4 bronzes)

  2. Brazil: 33 points (5 golds, 2 silvers and 2 bronzes)

3.Italy: 27 points (4 golds, 2 silvers, 1 bronze)

4.Argentina: 19 points (2 golds, 3 silvers)

5.France: 15 points (2 golds, 1 silver, 2 bronzes)

Spain

La Roja is one of the teams that has won one of the 21 World Cups and is one of the benchmarks of world soccer. The team that managed to win in South Africa 2010 marked an epoch in international soccer and managed to win 2 consecutive Euro Cups and a World Cup between those competitions. However, they always had good teams and despite not having another medal, several players from that country have been among the most important in the world.

japan

The Giant Killer who beat two World Cup champions

Japan

Despite the leap in quality experienced by the Japanese and the inclusion of some of their players, the quality of this team is far from Germany and Spain, even when the draw for this World Cup was announced, most specialists and fans, including this author, considered Spain and Germany as qualified. Very few, not to be absolute, saw the possibility that the Japanese could advance over the two giants of the group.

japan vs germany

Japan's first test.

Japan and Germany met on November 23. This match was key for both teams because a victory would give them the possibility of reaching 3 points and with a draw or another victory they could assure their place in the next round of the World Cup.

The match started as usual and in the first half Germany dominated at ease, had the upper hand in the match, attacked the Japanese goal insistently and practically left the Japanese with no options. At the end of the half, the scoreboard showed 1:0 in favor of the Teutons, which did not reflect what had actually happened in the first half.

It is good to reiterate that Germany dominated all the statistics of that first half, but they made a very serious mistake: they missed many goals that were practically made and in sport in general and soccer in particular there is a maxim that says that if you don't score, they will score and that happened in the second half, when Japan settled on the field, moved forward their lines, began to play on the wings and exploit the speed of their players and in less than ten minutes they turned the game around.

In the end, Japan beat Germany and gave them a mortal blow from which they could not recover.

On the same day, Spain faced Costa Rica and beat them seven goals to nil. Everything presaged that Costa Rica would be beaten by everyone and that Japan should take advantage of the match against the Ticos to seal their place in the round of 16.

However, in Japan's match against Costa Rica, the CONCACAF team gave the Japanese a hard blow and defeated them by one goal to zero. This set the stage for Spain and Germany to seal their qualification against Japan and Costa Rica in the last game of the Group Stage. At least that's what many of us thought.

japanvsspain

Japan's final test

The first day of December would mark the now or never for the four teams in Group E, as all 4 groups could advance to the Round of 16 because not even Spain, which dominated with 4 points, was safe, as Japan and Costa Rica had 3 points and even Germany, which had 1 point, had a chance to qualify. Several combinations could occur and anyone could go through.

For example, and this was what most expected: If Spain and Germany won, both teams would qualify, but if both lost, Japan and Costa Rica would qualify. Others could happen.

Spain vs Japan.

The game was very similar to the one played by Japan against Germany, because in the first half Spain overwhelmed Japan, was superior in ball control, had a clear connection between the midfield and the forwards, which yielded positive results for La Roja, which before 20 minutes had already dominated the game and the scoreboard.

At the end of the half, the same thing happened as in the game against Germany: the Japanese were dominated, but they held their own and only conceded one goal.

In the second half, the coach made changes that paid off. Faced with the lack of danger from the Spanish team, they decided to move forward, exploit the flanks and launch balls into space, so that their players could win duels with the defenders and try to hurt them. This strategy paid off, and in just three minutes Japan turned the match around, when in the 48th and 51st minutes Ritsu and Tanaka scored the equalizer and the lead for Japan.

It is good to point out that there was a moment in which a major surprise was taking place because Japan and Costa Rica were winning and if they had stayed that way they would have assured both of them a place in the group.

The game between Japan and Spain ended with that score (2-1) and Japan beat Spain, dominated the group and eliminated Germany who, despite the 4-2 victory, could not advance to the round of 16 because Spain had a better goal average.

giants

Why was Japan able to beat two world champions?

  • They have a tactical discipline that they do not violate in any situation.
  • They are very fast players and their speed is a function of their offense.
  • They have tried to hold on in the first half and in the second half they move forward and use their speed as a lethal weapon.
  • They have a vertical game that sometimes reminds us of the Bundesliga. Perhaps this is due to the fact that many of their players play in Germany.
  • Another important element is their play on the wings.
  • Their defense, without being one of the best in the world, is very effective and they balance their lack of physicality and size with an excellent positioning on the field.
  • They never give up and their patience in finding the right moment to attack has been fundamental.

In the other group there were two big surprises as Morocco topped the group with 7 points and Croatia will be the one to join them, following the latter's draw with Belgium. The Belgian team that holds the second place in the FIFA ranking and was considered to reach one of the top positions in this competition was left out of the group.

A final thought.

The twelfth round of the World Cup has concluded and once again one of the rules of this competition has come true, with the absence in the round of 16 of teams from the so-called soccer powers and the attendance at that stage of others that are doing it for the first time or that are from the so-called "small teams". Not only Germany was left out, teams such as Belgium, Mexico and Denmark are out of the World Cup. On the other hand, countries such as Morocco, Australia and Japan are still in the Round of 16.

Germany is again left out of the World Cup and again an Asian team takes them out of the World Cup, as in Russia 2018 South Korea took them out and now Japan does. Again they have to analyze what is happening because after winning the Brazil 2018 World Cup they have been left in the Group Stage in the following two World Cups.

Japan has been the pleasant surprise of this group because they knew how to capitalize two victories, against the clear favorites of the group and can move to fourth or be left on the way, but they are world champions along with their fans, for the discipline and education demonstrated, because, as in Russia 2018 they leave clean bleachers and locker rooms, something worthy of admiration and to follow.

This day has demonstrated the greatness of this sport and why many consider it the most beautiful sport in the world. The joys and sorrows experienced by the fans who witnessed these games is worthy of fiction novels and the dedication of its players is worthy of admiration.

Many congratulations to those who advanced and critical and urgent reflection for those who remained. For the time being, they should take a short break and start working with their sights set on 2026.

Salud y saludos.
