Quadrophenia Anniversary
Today 14 September marks the 43rd anniversary of the release of "Quadrophenia", a film based on and inspired by The Who's work of the same title, a conceptual rock opera about a young British mod music lover in 1960s London and his psychological, family, social and work-related problems.
The film uses The Who's soundtrack as the thread of the story in which Jimmy, a young British man addicted to amphetamines and undergoing psychiatric treatment, is caught between his devotion to the music he idolises and how he fits into the society in which he lives, something he fails to internalise properly and which condemns him to a tragic end. Likewise, the film reflects very well the events that took place in 1964 in the English town of Brighton with the famous pitched battle between mods and rockers.
Needless to say, the soundtrack by The Who is magnificent, for me an absolute masterpiece, even though some place it below "Tommy", their previous rock opera. The film as such seems to me to be quite good, entertaining and interesting beyond the musical taste that each one of us may have. With the passage of time it has become a cult film perfectly valid for viewing today.
