John Bonham Death Anniversary
Today marks the 42nd anniversary of John Bonham's death. Nicknamed Bonzo, he was the legendary drummer of Led Zeppelin.
For many, including myself, he was one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock music. His style is unmistakable and easily recognisable. He knew how to rewrite the way of playing rock, giving it new rhythmic figures and new breaks together with a new use of the bass drum that made it much more forceful. At the same time, he was able to introduce elements from other styles such as jazz and funk, which greatly enriched it.
Famous for his drunkenness, his fondness for cars and for smashing up hotel rooms when he toured with his band. He died drowning in his own vomit after a drunken binge.
His death led to the break-up of Led Zeppelin and left a void that was never filled.
