Efecto Mpemba - My Actifit Report Card: March 24 2023

Did you know that hot water freezes before cold water? Although it may seem impossible and you may think it is a joke, it is true and scientifically proven. However, it is also true that this is a relative statement that has a certain trick to it.

This phenomenon is known as the Mpemba effect in honour of an African scientist who in 1963 noticed this circumstance. The fact is that already 300 years BC the Greek philosopher Aristotle had described the phenomenon and later renowned scientists had investigated it but had never been able to explain it.

Today it can be empirically proven that a cup of hot water at 80 degrees Celsius freezes much faster than a cup of water at 10 degrees Celsius. And why is this? There is no single explanation, but rather it is thought to be due to a combination of several physical phenomena: the evaporation of the liquid combined with the better and faster circulation of the liquid towards the walls of the container and the lower presence of gases in the hot water.

However, for the Mpemba effect to be noticeable, the test to be carried out must be between two containers containing liquids with a considerable temperature difference of more than 30º Celsius. So far it is considered a scientific curiosity but there is not much interest in carrying out in-depth studies on the subject.
