Newton y la Manzana (Newton and the Apple) [ESP-ENG] My Actifit Report Card: March 26 2023

The history of science is full of anecdotes, curiosities and coincidences. It is well known that Fleming discovered penicillin by chance and the same happened with X-rays or stainless steel. But what about Isaac Newton's famous apple? Is it true that the famous scientist formulated the law of gravity after an apple fell on his head?

The reality is that there is nothing to corroborate this fact, no certainty about it, in fact Newton never spoke or wrote anything about it.

The legend about this story comes from a biography written by a good friend of Newton's who said that both often sat down to talk about scientific topics under a fruit tree and on one of those occasions Newton told him about the famous apple.

The existence of the force of gravity had already been intuited and described by other scientists of the 17th century but there was no scientific formulation on the subject, so Newton is credited with its discovery.

It is known that Isaac Newton had to seclude himself for a few years in his parents' farm due to the plague that devastated England in the mid-seventeenth century and it is known that there are apple fruit trees in that place. But from there to saying that Newton had a moment of sublime lucidity when an apple fell on him is a long way.

Newton was not a scientist who dedicated himself to observing nature and formulating philosophical deductions about it; he was a laboratory scientist, a scientist who experimented conscientiously.

Many historians are convinced that the story is either made up or is just a metaphor for how he discovered and formulated his famous law of gravity.

Whether or not it is true, Newton's apple went down in history and is closely linked to the world of science.
