Vieja Zelanda- Old Zealand [ESP/ENG]- My Actifit Report Card: March 31 2023

Nueva Zelanda es un país situado en el suroeste del Océano Pacífico, muy cerca de Australia, y está formado por dos grandes islas y un gran número de islas más pequeñas. Ahora bien… ¿por qué se llama Nueva Zelanda? ¿Existe una Vieja Zelanda?

Aunque las tribus maoríes habitaban esas islas desde hace más de mil años, los europeos comenzaron a llegar a ellas en torno a los siglos XVI y XVII.

En aquella época colonial los conquistadores eran poco originales para bautizar los nuevos territorios descubiertos así que era muy habitual poner nombres de sus países de origen añadiendo el término “Nuevo”.

Por ejemplo los británicos bautizaron a la colonia donde hoy se asienta Nueva York con ese nombre en honor a la ciudad inglesa de York, y a Nueva Jersey en honor a la isla de Jersey en el canal de la Mancha.

A mediados del siglo XVII llegaron los holandeses a lo que hoy en día es Nueva Zelanda y lo llamaron así en honor a Zelanda que es una provincia de los Países Bajos (Holanda) situada al sur del mismo. Zelanda en holandés significa “tierra de mar”. A partir de ese momento Nueva Zelanda ya comenzó a aparecer en los mapas de navegantes holandeses.

In the mid-17th century the Dutch arrived in what is now New Zealand and named it after Zeeland, which is a province of the Netherlands (Holland) to the south of the Netherlands. Zeeland in Dutch means "land of the sea". From that time onwards, New Zealand began to appear on the maps of Dutch navigators.
