Delivery near Calabazar Bridge

Havana, 9:45 am.

I can say my day began productively. I had to deliver an outfit to someone buying from a local vendor, who occasionally calls me for errands. I’m glad when it’s early, because not only do I get a few extra notes in my wallet, I also get some exercise and enjoy the morning freshness on my bicycle.

So I headed towards Calabazar Bridge, taking the whole of 100 Avenue until I reached the turn-off. At that point I was a bit lost, because honestly I had never cycled there alone before. Then I got confused when climbing the bridge to turn left. I should have taken the second exit, not the first one as I did. But in the end everything was fine: I learnt, I asked two or three people from that area who showed me the way, although I already had some idea thanks to the Google Maps app.

I made the delivery. The woman was pleased with her garment, and I headed back home intending to buy some food such as eggs, burgers, rice and spaghetti. Shortly after leaving Calabazar Bridge, I stopped to take some photos with my camera. They are the first two I am sharing. Since I was carrying the 45–200 mm lens, I couldn’t later use it to photograph this roadside stall that has always caught my attention. Every time I passed by there, sporadically and mostly by car or bus, I wanted to take photos of it because of the variety it offers and because from the road you can see that what they sell is of great quality. It is a prosperous business, as can be seen at a glance, and today while cycling some ideas about prosperity and abundance began to circle in my mind.

Evidently all of this must be selling, otherwise it wouldn’t be so ‘beautifully’ stocked. This is not the face of a country where blackouts of more than 18 hours are the order of the day and where scarcity and inflation dominate the daily landscape of every Cuban... I think we are misinterpreting reality…
