Damp hike on Big Hill - My Actifit Report Card: July 4 2025

The holiday started off cloudy with drizzle so it was going to be a wet trek on the Big Hill trail network a few miles out of town. I'll be running in a 6 hour trail ultramarathon in August so I thought that a trek on the course would be nice and Lulu would enjoy the time in the forest.

Lulu and I did a shorter loop around the hatchery and park before heading up into the hills where we would be a thousand feet higher in elevation. The Big Hill trail network consists of several loops with the main loop measuring in at around 8 miles. I've run here in the past and it's a nice mix of open pasture and woodsy single-track that is used all year long.

The ground was wet and muddy in spots (plus lots of cow droppings) but the footing was fine and the misty weather and cooler temperatures made for a nice hike.
The race course is 3 miles according to the race website and it's a good mix of trail conditions and fairly moderate climbs so hopefully I'll hit mid 30 miles.
Plenty of beautiful and peaceful forest scenery as we were alone for a 4 mile total.
