STOCKHOLM: Swedish scientists have invented a jelly-like substance that can kill germs against which even antibiotics are not effective.
Such light jelly-like substances are technically called "hydrogels" because most of them contain water while they are very soft like a toothpaste or jelly.
The new hydrogel has been jointly developed by experts from the Karolinska Institute, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Karolinska University Hospital.
The important thing is that this hydrogel does not contain any antibiotics. This is a feature not found in any other antiseptic hydrogel.
According to a report published in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society , this jelly-like substance, on the one hand, kills hard and tough germs and on the other hand, our immune system (immune system) also fights against infections. Strengthens
In the preparation of this hydrogel, special polymers called "dehydrate macromolecules" have been used which are not toxic.
These are large molecules that are intertwined like the branches of a tree.
When these polymers are sprayed on the wound, they immediately form hydrogels and form a protective fence around the wound to protect it from dust.
The polymers in the hydrogel begin to kill germs faster, but their mechanism of action is very different from that of antibiotics.
At the same time, these polymers increase the production of specific molecules (peptides) from body cells in the affected area that have the ability to kill germs naturally.
In the face of this two-pronged attack, even hard-nosed and straightforward germs do not survive and disappear rapidly.
The new hydrogel has so far been successfully tested against two types of microbes that have developed strong resistance to conventional antibiotics.
The effectiveness of hydrogel against these microbes persisted even after repeated use.
It is hoped that the use of this hydrogel will also lead to the development of new wound healing bandages.
