Ancient medicine was far more advanced than it is thought to be. A remarkable discovery in Sweden, dating from between 1260 and 1527, was the discovery of a humerus (arm) bone with a copper plate surgically attached to it.

The bone was found to have grown around the plate, indicating a successful operation and proper healing. Copper was probably deliberately chosen for its antimicrobial properties, which acted as a kind of primary antiseptic to prevent infection. This was an idea that was centuries ahead of its time.

​This discovery challenges the idea that medieval medical practices were simply rudimentary and herbal. It highlights the innovative power of the early surgeons of the time, who combined practical skills with knowledge of natural materials.
