Victorian courting conversation chair, Europe, 19th century—This was a type of elegant and creative furniture that allowed for intimate conversation between men and women, in keeping with the social etiquette of the era. Typically S-shaped or double-sided, these chairs allowed two people to sit side by side or at an angle, so that they could see each other's faces, but avoid excessive physical contact. At the time, "courting" was a highly regulated and family-controlled process, and this type of chair provided a balance between social courtesy and private conversation. In keeping with Victorian taste, it was often decorated with fine wood, fine fabrics, and intricate carvings, which were symbols of luxury and etiquette.
