The Kansas City Chiefs ended a 50 year drought by not only making it to Superbowl LIV but by also winning it. The last time they made it to the arena was in 1970 when they beat the Minnesota Vikings way back in Super Bowl IV. With Patrick Mahomes II becoming the youngest MVP to win the Super Bowl, the Chiefs can look ahead to a potential dynasty.

The loss for the 49ers means they remain stuck on five Super Bowl wins for now, and remain one short of the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, who lead with six Super Bowl victories.

The loss also means that 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will have to wait to earn his own ‘real’ Super Bowl ring. He’s won two however they where both at his time at the Patriots as a back up to Tom Brady.

San Francisco can keep their heads up as they became only the third team in NFL history to reach the Super Bowl after winning four or fewer games the previous season, finishing 4-12 in 2018.

The Chiefs victory now means they’ve ended the second-longest Lombardi Trophy drought among teams that have already won it. Only the New York Jets have had to go longer than the Chiefs did, with 51 years between Super Bowl wins. There are still nine other teams yet to lift the Lombardi.

The win is also of particular significance to Chief’s head coach Andy Reid, his first Super Bowl win. He is widely considered one of the best coaches in the league and finally has a Super Bowl ring in his 21st season as a head coach and 15 years after losing Super Bowl XXXIX with the Philadelphia Eagles. Winning it also likely locks Reid into the future Hall of Fame.

For now, the Chiefs can bask in the glory of being World Champions. Their schedules are absolutely clear now and will be that way until around mid-March.

The grueling season is now over and the players can now enjoy their newly acquired bling – the Patriots 2015 Super Bowl ring was worth around $36,500, containing 205 diamonds. The 2018 Patriots also took home a check worth $118,000 each after Super Bowl LII so expect the Chiefs to taken home even more than that.

So what’s next for the rest of us? For fans of the Chiefs, they’ll be lapping it up as World Champs. For fans of the other 31 teams we all have have a long seven months of waiting until the 2020 season begins.
