Country: Serbia
Nickname: The Eagles
Last World Cup Appearance: 2018 (Group Stage)
Previous World Cup Appearances: 1930, 1950, 1954, 1958, 1962, 1974, 1982, 1990, 1998, 2006.
2010, 2018 (as Serbia)

World Rank: #25
Star Players: Dusan Vlahovic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Last November, Serbia's president Aleksandar Vucic offered the Serbian national team a bonus of a million Euros if they managed to secure direct qualification to the 2022 World Cup if they beat Portugal.

They did it, coming back from 2-1 behind away to Portugal to pinch automatic qualification. They finished their group undefeated which also contained Ireland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan.

Historically Serbia did well in the early years of the World Cup as a part of Yugoslavia. In their last three tournaments - including being known as Serbia and Montenegro in 2006 - they haven't made it beyond the group stages. Not since France 1998 - as Yugoslavia - have they made it to the knockout rounds.

This is a team that will be full of belief however and upfront they have one of the best strikers in the world in Dusan Vlahovic. He's a dark horse to win the 2022 World Cup Golden Boot especially if Serbia canale a deep tournament run.

Vlahovic nabbed four goals in eight games during qualifying for the tournament which is pretty much on par with his goals-to-game ratio for the national team.

World Cup Group: Group G - Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon.

Prediction: Serbia have the quality to be able to qualify for the knockout stages. They have one of the best strikers in the world with Vlahovic upfront and they also have Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic who's continually threatening on goal in the Premier League.

Those two will be well supported by captain Dusan Tadic who is an assists machine for Ajax. Filip Kostic is also one of the finest crossers of the ball in the world and will threaten down the left flank. Sitting in midfield is Serie A star Sergij Milinkovic-Savic who has fantastic technique, intelligence, vision, and exceptional passing ability

Serbia's best chance of progressing will be it's attack which is their best form of defence. Their likely 3-4-3 setup will compliment for its attacking options of Vlahovic, Mitrovic, Tadic and Milinkovic-Savic to make up for a unheralded defensive line.

In what's to be one of the most interesting groups to watch, it's likely to come down to Serbia vs. Switzerland. I can see the Swiss somehow sneaking through the group ahead of Serbia, because the Swiss usually always find a way to. I say that with an absolute lack of confidence because this Serbian team could well cause some big shocks with that front line.

Serbia has been my favorite but got out of the race last World cup. I'm sure they are going to move forward this time.

Serbia is always a strong team, they don't have a great figure, but all their players as a team will fight. Luka Jović catches my eye who in my opinion has been underused at Real Madrid, yet he gave a great performance at Eintracht Frankfurt and is not doing badly at Florentina. Thanks for your analysis

I think you forgot to add Luka Jovic as a top player of Serbia; but then come to think of it, he doesn’t really deserve a spot in the top players there. He has lost form after his move to Real Madrid. I thought after his move to Fiorentina he would gain that form back but it seems to have faded away.

Vlahovic has always been a top top player and boy I think Serbia have a great asset in their hands here and if they can use his very very well they will surely make it far in the World Cup.
