The 10 Most Popular Sports in the World
What is the most popular sport in the world? I had a look at a few lists online and I have to say that I was a bit disappointed in what I read. All that kept happening was that they looped back and kept referencing each other and I could not find any proper sources of the information as to the number of fans for a particular source. So I decided to do all the leg work and create a PROPER list of the most popular sports in the world. Let's start!
Most Popular Sports in the World?
To work out what the most popular sports in the world are we took an in depth look at proper numbers and didn't involve personal opinion. My calculations on the number of fans is based on fans who actively watch and engage with a sport, and takes into account the fan numbers from official governing sports organizations. So let's take a look at the most accurate list of the most popular sports in the world.
10. Baseball - 200 million
Baseball has 200 million fans worldwide which is a number confirmed by the World Baseball and Softball Confederation, the international governing body for baseball and softball. Baseball is the most popular sport in Japan and is the favorite sport of almost half of the country. It's also extremely popular in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Central America and of course, America.
Major League Baseball continues to be the most popular baseball league in the world. Baseball has helped to shape American history and is considered the country's national sport and national pastime. Baseball first became an official Olympic sport at the Barcelona Games in 1992 but was removed in 2008 because the MLB refused to allow its players to participate at the Olympics.
Baseball is the hardest skilled sport there is. #Facts• 95+ moving • 85+ cutting • 78+ curving • 105+ coming at ya HOT The athleticism, hand-eye, body control, reaction time, decision making time.. the game is as HARD as it gets.. It's what makes it GREAT — Dan Cevette (@DanCevette) September 22, 2021
9. American Football - 200 million
American football is the most popular sport in America and is the favorite sport of 37% of Americans. College football has 145 million fans and is considered to be one of the most important sports culturally for America. High school football is an obsession with small town America and is equally as important as college football.
On a global level American football isn't anywhere near as popular as it is at home. The National Football League accounts for 200 million fans, mostly in America, but there are sizeable fan bases for American football in Mexico, Brazil and Canada.
8. Table Tennis - 330 million
Table tennis has 330 million fans and is eighth on the list of most popular sports in the world. That number is based on the record viewers for the table tennis world championships. Table tennis first became an Olympic sport at the 1988 Seoul Games.
The large majority of table tennis fans worldwide come from China where the game is officially known as "ping pong". Table tennis is the national sport of China and the sport has a rich history in the country. Before the 1980's much of China's success on the international sporting stage was in table tennis and they continue to dominate the table tennis world rankings.
...OK tribe I'll be back tomorrow with part two.
