The 5 Expansion Cities for an International NFL Team? (Part 2)

G'day tribe. Yesterday I wrote the first part of the series featuring Dusseldorf, Toronto and Frankfurt. You can check it out in my posts here. Germany featured twice. Did you know they have a huge cult following of American Football in Germany? It's not something you'd expect.

Canada featured on the list and it somewhat makes sense to expand the NFL into Canada. The NHL, MLS, NBA and MLB all have, so surely the NFL will do so soon? There is Canada's own version of football, the Canadian Football League which is similar but has a long history in the country and that is a big hurdle for the NFL to try and contend with.

Let's take a look at the final two favourite cities for the NFL to expand too. If the NFL wants to truly go global then it can make a statement by expanding overseas. Of course it comes with its own challenges but the NFL International Series is showing us that it is all possible.

2. Mexico City, Mexico

A regular among the NFL International Series is Mexico City, one of the favourite cities for the next NFL expansion teams.

Mexico City hosted the first international regular season NFL game in 2005 and set an attendance record of 103,467 in the process. The record for any NFL game was set in Mexico City in 1994 when 112,376 watched a preseason game between Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Oilers.

An international NFL Team in Mexico is logistically easier than having a team in Europe. Outside of America, Mexico has more NFL fans than anywhere in the world with more than 22 million fans.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that Munich will host a game in 2022, and there will be four total games in Germany over 4 years — two in Munich, two in Frankfurt. In addition, there will be a game in Mexico this coming season.

1. London, England

London is most likely to get an international NFL Team and has been for some time now. It's been the feature location for the NFL International Series since 2007 with four games featuring in the city in 2019.

An estimated 15 million fans follow American football in the United Kingdom. The NFL International Series has already helped prove that it is logistically possible to travel across the Atlantic for NFL games.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have continuously been rumoured to be relocating to London. The city has also hosted the London Monarchs during the NFL Europa days.

I think either option has it benefits! The El Capitines play in Mexico City in the G-League so the NBA are setting up potential moves. NFL is also basing some International Series games there so it could be only a matter of time until we see it the major leagues spread to Mexico

Oh absolutely that is true, Mexico deserves some mainstream sports love (maybe I sound like an ignorant American by saying that idk LOL). I can picture the NFL having a nice little culture shift and new tradition down in Mexico, that would be so fun! Mexico and Canada. Really establish a North American presence. I know that some Brazilians love the NFL too!

I can imagine it would be an awesome weekend away trip to follow a favorite team.

It actually amazed me that Brazil has the most fans in the NFL outside of America!! Almost one-third of Brazilians. I'd take kicker Cairo Santos just for the jersey revenue!

I guess Brazilians enjoy the combat/intensity of it all, they love MMA too of course as I'm sure you know. I know Jose Aldo enjoys the game! One-third that's nuts!! Love your content man keep it up 💪
