The 6 Worst Teams in Premier League History (Part 2)

Gday tribe. Yesterday I wrote about the worst teams in Premier League history which you can check here. Today I present part two with the final three worst teams ever. Just how bad were they?

3. Huddersfield Town (2018-19)

Huddersfield Town survived their first season in the Premier League - and top-flight football for that matter - during the 2017-18 season. The very next season they were officially relegated on March 30 after 32 games. It was the second earliest relegation in Premier League history, only one day later than Derby County's all-time record.

It could have been worse had it not been for the Wolves. Huddersfield picked up wins in both their fixtures against Wolverhampton on their way to 16 points in total for the season.

Ramadan Sobhi was Huddersfield's most notable buy for the season, brought in from Stoke City for £5.7m. He only made four appearances all off the bench before returning to Egypt. Manager David Wagner was sacked in January and was replaced with Jan Siewert who managed the club through the remainder of the season.

2. Sunderland (2005-06)

How could Sunderland get any worse than their 2002-03 season? The 2005-06 Sunderland team, that's how. They surpassed their own record for the lowest Premier League points scored which they previously set at 19 points.

It's little surprise that Sunderland struggled so badly considering they spent a lowly £4.25m on transfers during the season, almost offensive by Premier League standards and far less than what they spent in 2002-03.

Striker Jon Stead was brought in from Blackburn for £1.8m and goalkeeper Kelvin Davis from Ipswich for £1.25m. Stead was out of his depth, scoring one goal in 30 appearances and Davis managed only four clean sheets in 33 games.

Mick McCarthy managed the club until mid-Feb before being sacked, Kevin Ball taking over as caretaker manager. The only shining light for this Sunderland team was a win over Middlesbrough in the Tees–Wear derby earlier on in the season.

1. Derby County (2007-08)

Derby County's season never even got off. They did manage to win against Newcastle in matchday six thanks to a 39th-minute Kenny Miller strike. It would be their only win of the season. Billy Davies was sacked in November and Paul Jewell couldn't turn things around, the Rams going on to record 32 games without a win, a top-flight record.

The club ended up with the lowest Premier League total in history with 11 points. They also matched the inglorious record of Loughborough's Football League record of just one win in a season set in 1899–1900. After only 32 games it was the earliest relegation in history set on March 29 and it gets better. Derby also conceded the most Premier League goals in a 38-game season, scored the fewest goals (tied only with 2020-21 Sheffield United), and set the worst ever goal differential.

The board were accused by fans of failing to properly invest. Derby broke their record transfer fee signing by buying Robert Earnshaw from Norwich City for £3.5m. He scored one goal in 22 Premier League games during the season. The £3m transfer of Claude Davis was also considered a major flop. Chief Executive Trevor Birch as well as chairman Peter Gadsby both left their positions in October.
