The Biggest MLS Rivalries of All Time
G'day tribe! It was a while ago when I wrote about the best rivalries in the MLS. Since then, not only has my writing style changed but so has my list! The MLS is slowly growing and becoming one of the best soccer leagues in the world so lets look at the 10 best rivalries in Major League Soccer that is making the league one of the best.
10. Precourt Derby
When Austin FC played their first game in 2021 the Columbus Crew were always going to form one of the biggest MLS rivalries with them. Former Columbus Crew owner Anthony Precourt announced plans in 2017 to relocate the club to Austin as Columbus wouldn't fund a new stadium,
After much uproar from MLS and Columbus Crew fans, a local ownership group saved the crew in 2019 by buying Precourt out. The MLS then allowed Precourt to buy an MLS expansion franchise which we brought to Austin. Columbus fans won't ever forget his efforts to relocate the Crew.

9. Rocky Mountain Cup
Mountain West giants Real Salt Lake and Colorado Rapids have one of the biggest MLS derbies. Since the rivalry's beginning in 2005 Real Salt Lake has dominated Colorado. The most memorable and heated game was in 2006 when the Rapids beat Salt Lake. Fans threw debris and missiles onto the field throughout the game, Rapids captain Pablo Mastroeni then igniting the derby by celebrating and taunting Salt Lake fans following their win.

8. Texas Derby
The Texas derby between FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo started back in 2006 and has historically been evenly matched. The winner takes home one of the most unique trophies in world soccer - a replica 18th century mountain howitzer cannon called the El Capitán.

7. Hudson River Derby
Named after the river that runs through New York, the Hudson River Derby is fought between the two clubs of the largest city in America, New York Red Bulls and New York City FC. A 7-0 victory for Red Bulls in 2016 helped set the tone for the rivalry in a game that became known as "The Red Wedding".

I personally believe that football will prevail in North America as well as in the South and Europe and the rest of the world. Recently I came across some students from USA, who are in my country (Greece) in a university student exchange program and I was impressed by their knowledge of European football. More specifically, a girl played in the respective football team of her university. When I teased them by telling them that in America they only like baseball, almost everyone told me that they find it incredibly boring! I totally agree with you about the future of MLS! Nice post as always!
Oh yes! In fact soccer as Americans know it as, recently surpassed ice hockey as the most popular sport in America. Soccer keeps on getting more popular and baseball - which is in third - is declining in popularity! Thanks for stopping by and offering your insight
I think MLS has evolved in a very interesting and competetiv league! Yes it is no where near the top European Leagues but I still think that the level of football is very nice to watch. These rivalries are also very good for this league as it adds some tradition and competetivness :)
About to post part two 🙂 I think the MLS will grow into a top 10 league in the next decade. It's showing phenomenal growth and realistically you could expand it and have promotion relegation with the amount of potential franchises, although I don't think that suits the American pro sports scene
