Escribir de pelota en Cuba para decir algo novedoso es un poco difícil. Es que en este país casi todo el mundo sabe de deporte y mucho más de beisbol. La gran mayoría sin distinción de sexo o edad conoce algún pelotero, domina estadísticas y sobre todo es árbitro de las gradas.

Muchos equipos levantan pasiones a nivel nacional. Pinar del Río, Industriales, Villa Clara y Santiago de Cuba son los grandes equipos que recuerdo, en la década del 90 del pasado siglo, con una batería de enormes jonroneros, pitcher de primera línea, catcher. Los que me leen me reprocharán no mencionar Santi Espíritus, Las Tunas o Granma, pero ya lo dije aquí, todo el mundo sabe de pelota.

Hace algunas semanas Cuba estuvo pendiente de uno de los acontecimientos más importante en materia de pelota: El Clásico Mundial de Beisbol, un equipo compuesto por los peloteros más destacados a nivel nacional y algunos de origen cubano que juegan en ligas extranjeras y viven en otros países.

El equipo Cuba, también fue bautizado como el “Team Asere” gracias a la canción de Alexander Abreu y Habana de primera. A partir de ahí muchas banderas cubanas y pulóveres con la consigna representando nuestra Isla.

Writing about baseball in Cuba to say something new is a bit difficult. In this country, almost everybody knows about sports and much more about baseball. The vast majority, regardless of sex or age, knows a baseball player, knows statistics and, above all, is an umpire in the stands.

Many teams raise passions at the national level. Pinar del Rio, Industriales, Villa Clara and Santiago de Cuba are the great teams that I remember, in the 90s of the last century, with a battery of huge home run hitters, first line pitcher, catcher. Those who read me will reproach me for not mentioning Santi Espíritus, Las Tunas or Granma, but I already said it here, everybody knows about baseball.

A few weeks ago Cuba was watching one of the most important events in baseball: the World Baseball Classic, a team made up of the most outstanding national baseball players and some of Cuban origin who play in foreign leagues and live in other countries.

Team Cuba was also baptized as "Team Asere" thanks to the song by Alexander Abreu and Habana de primera. From then on, many Cuban flags and sweaters with the slogan representing our Island.

Fueron jornadas intensas, juegos de preparación, comentarios y programas televisivos. Peñas en las esquinas y parques del país porque el equipo grande, el de las cuatro letras, estaba de competencia. Los dos primeros juegos con un resultado nefasto hicieron reflexionar qué necesitamos para ganar con un equipo que ya no es aquel de Kindelán, Pacheco, Casanova, Omar Linares, Paret.

En un mundo donde priman las nuevas tecnologías, con la sabermetría, los cauteos, los topes de preparación en diferentes regiones, los contratos de peloteros en disímiles ligas.

El último juego contra Estados Unidos, un equipo imponente por las estadísticas de cada uno de sus jugadores. El medio hostil que fue a sumar una nueva gota al agua de las tenciones utilizó el deporte para debatir cuestiones políticas y requirió de nuestros deportistas una concentración extra.

Varios amigos presenciaron el choque entre Cuba y Estados Unidos. Unos amigos cubanos que hace rato viven en Estados Unidos muy emocionados, me llamaron por WhatsApp en medio del juego, ellos vieron a Pedro Luis Lazo, ese gigante pinareño. Me dijeron "mira, mira, mira, nunca pensé que podía volverlo a ver a Lazo, al mejor pitcher, al más alegre y campechano".

They were intense days, preparation games, commentaries and television programs. There were clubs in the corners and parks of the country because the big team, the one with the four letters, was in competition. The first two games with a disastrous result made us reflect on what we need to win with a team that is no longer that of Kindelán, Pacheco, Casanova, Omar Linares, Paret.

Después de perder el juego regresaron a Cuba. El recibimiento de todo el pueblo con una alegría eufórica fue motivo de noticias en la Habana y en todo el país. En Pinar del Río tuve la posibilidad de recibir a Pedro Luis Lazo, justo frente a su casa que está al lado de la Universidad de Pinar del Río dónde yo trabajo.

Allí, escoltado por la bandera cubana y por la algarabía de jóvenes estudiantes, llegó con una hermosa sonrisa y se tiró fotos con mucha gente, extendió la mano, hizo cuentos y dedicó unas palabras a su público.

Ahora lo que más interesa en materia de béisbol en Cuba es la Serie Nacional 61. El equipo de Pinar del Río ha sorprendido positivamente a la afición con su tremendo paso. La mayoría de las subseries las ha ganado en buena lid, manteniéndose generalmente en el primer lugar.

Lo que más le llama la atención a mi hijo Julito es que su amigo Luis Pablo Acosta, jardinero central del equipo pativerdes está colocado como el líder de bateo y un average de 431. Este joven pelotero es muy responsable y le encanta jugar con los muchachos.

After losing the game they returned to Cuba. The reception of all the people with euphoric joy was the reason for news in Havana and all over the country. In Pinar del Rio I had the opportunity to receive Pedro Luis Lazo, right in front of his house which is next to the University of Pinar del Rio where I work.

There, escorted by the Cuban flag and by the noise of young students, he arrived with a beautiful smile and took pictures with many people, extended his hand, told stories and dedicated a few words to his audience.

Now the most interesting thing in baseball in Cuba is the 61st National Series. The Pinar del Rio team has positively surprised the fans with its tremendous pace. It has won most of the sub-series in a good way, generally staying in the first place.

What most strikes my son Julito is that his friend Luis Pablo Acosta, center fielder of the Pinar del Rio team, is the batting leader with an average of 431. This young player is very responsible and loves to play with the boys.

Mi hijo habla mucho con él y Luis Pablo le retibuye con cariño y hasta le ha traído pelotas para que juegue. Pinar del Río, el equipo Vegueros tiene hoy 13 juegos ganados y 7 perdidos en el número 1 de la tabla de posiciones. Escoltado por un pelotón importante: Las Tunas, Matanzas, Artemisa y Santic spiritus. Este lunes comenzando la semana de receso escolar fuimos al Estadio Capitán San Luis para verlos jugar contra Camagüey.

El pitcheo nuestro estuvo a cargo de uno de los grandes, Erlis Casanova, que se mantuvo las 9 entradas frente al también experimentado Rodolfo Soris Yera por los toros camagüeyanos, que luego tuvo que ser relevado por Francisco Ramos y más tarde este por Alejandro León.

Yo intentaba anotar cada jugada a sugerencia de mi primo @eduardo900613, pero confieso que me llamó mucho más el fenómeno sociocultural de las gradas, la atención, la reacción del graderío ante cada jugada, la forma de vestir de las personas, los dicharachos, la solidaridad entra las personas que se conocen allí mismo, pero conversan e intercambian criterios.

En esta fiesta deportiva se demuestra que el béisbol es patrimonio cubano y hay que defenderlo. El estadio estaba con bastante público, todos los espacios en los que había sombra estaban cubiertos. Por el audio local comentan que existían alrededor de 2700 personas observando el juego desde las gradas. Los colores que primaban en la ropa de los parciales pinareños: verde, amarillo, blanco, rojo. La música predominante la conga pinareña que hacía vibrar al público.

I was trying to write down every play at the suggestion of my cousin @eduardo900613, but I confess that I was much more attracted by the socio-cultural phenomenon of the stands, the attention, the reaction of the stands to every play, the way people dressed, the chatter, the solidarity between people who know each other there, but talk and exchange views.

Fue muy emocionante ver la pelota sobrepasar los muros del estadio con los batazos de Yaser Julio González, que en dos ocasiones la sacó por cuadrangular. A pesar del sol intenso en las afueras del estadio, en dirección de los 345 pies al fondo del terreno se encuentra "la lomita" aquel lugar también estaba repleto de personas en moto, bicicleta o auto que como si fuera en una grada más apoyaban a sus peloteros.

El choque terminó con marcador de 3 carreras, 7 hits y 2 errores por Camagüey y 6 carreras, 12 hits y 3 errores por parte de los Vegueros. La invitación quedó hecha para hoy martes a las 10 de la mañana. Este partido celebrado en horario matutino también fue emocionante con varias pifias por ambos equipos pero con la victoria de Pinar del Río y el aplauso cerrado de sus seguidores.

Mi niño muy contento con su salida y buen conocedor de las nóminas de los equipos, me ayudó en la redacción de esta información que más que estadísticas es muestra del amor que tenemos por el deporte nacional.
