We Are Alive And Thriving - My Actifit Report Card: July 4 2022

We are alive and thriving in every aspect.

This morning, my employees were giddy with enthusiasm. They danced around the bakery premises as if someone had won a jackpot. I couldn't help but offer them some cool drinks! It was worth the celebration, and you'll get to know why soon.

Of course, they were not the only ones, right from the factory premises, we could hear the echoes of joy spread wildly like contamination everywhere. Even older people couldn't hold back their expression of happiness. When I visited the main town, the city market centre, I saw a jubilating crowd moving like a train.

Mali has been in a terrible economic situation for some time. If you are up to date with international news, you might have heard that the former Mali president was ousted from power through a military coup in 2020 and later died in 2022. Since then the military had been at the helms of state affairs refusing to enter into negotiations with the regional governing body.

As a result, Mali has been subject to harsh commercial, financial, economic, and cross-border sanctions imposed by the ECOWAS, African Union, and western powers since January 1, 2022. There were no trade relations between the nation and its neighbours. The regional power shut down the nation's central bank. This was very tough for a nation that was already experiencing intense financial turmoil.

The average person is most impacted by the current unmanageable cost of living because the cost of food and other essentials quadrupled. Food items that once cost $1 are now $5. For instance, a bag of flour that I used to purchase for $28 has increased to between $44 and $45.

So, what sparked this overwhelming joy?
Yesterday, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) elected a new leader (Guinea Bissau President, his excellency Umaro Embalo) to take over the organization's affairs. Immediately after his election to the apex office, he ordered that all embargos against Mali and two other countries in the region be lifted forthwith.

The general public and company owners are greatly relieved by this. The incoming ECOWAS president was fully aware of the damage that these sanctions have caused innocent people and businesses in Mali. This is the reason he decided to resolve the problem yesterday before returning to his nation.

Malians are grateful. I could hear them chant, "President Umaro Embalo and the people of Guinea Bissau are Mali's true friends and brothers. We have enormous regard for Mr. President and his people. Malians will never forget them."

As a business person living in Mali, I also share in this joy because I know that in the coming days' things will change positively. Certainly, there is going to be smooth movement of goods and people among the neighbouring states and international flights to and from Mali will also resume again.

I left the factory earlier to avoid traffic at the peak hours, else I won't be home till late at night. After taking a bit of rest, I started my actifit sports activities within my house premises and on the decking.
