Snowy, Frozen Tundra!

It started out nicely enough! A break from the endless snow days and the sun promised change. The sun lied!

I was astonished to read the headline that we are moving into the coldest air mass on the planet. So, like colder than those penguins on the South Pole where we see them huddling in documentaries to stay alive together? Yep!

Looking at the forecast over the next week or so, these are obviously not record temperatures by any stretch of the imagination. Seeing projected high temperatures not cresting -10c for that long gives you the chills just looking at it.

So how do I cope with the cold? Head right on out in it for 10k + steps while delivering the news around town. It is more of a weekly gesture to connect the town with local stories written by local journalists than a money maker but it is usually good for plenty of outdoor steps.

Heading out as early as @davedickeyyall on a work day, it actually looks kinda nice! The snow crews have many of the streets plowed and the sun holds no warmth but is bright.

Still a bit treacherous for some as frigid temperatures and constant snow can make for some slippery roads. Those in a hurry and those who do not choose to use snow tires are a dangerous combination as seen in this fresh fender bender that has the police on scene.

Snow removal equipment of all sorts is mobilized to try and clear the roads, sidewalks and drive ways. Not fast enough for many who love to mobilize and bitch about it online but complainers gotta complain about something.

Funny to see people buying augmented shovels and pulling snow from their roof to prevent damage from the weight and ice.

You can see the clouds and snow came back later that morning making for some challenging driving too.

When you are out in it, bundled up and active enough to keep warm, it is actually quite lovely. Snow streets in a small Canadian town.

Taking my weekly shot from the steps of city hall looking north, a couple Canadian flags blow through the snow and life goes on.

)

This is the view from out there across the street. Old (by North American standards) building standing proud in the middle of town

A good way to warm up after so many outdoor winter steps is to head indoors for a little summer action. Indoor golf during the off season is a gift!

Back home, the sun is hidden and there is plenty of shoveling to do.

After that, a brisk walk out in the dog park as the little guy seems immune to the cold temps.

Finishing off with a purely Canadian shot, the bbq needed a bit of shoveling too. I am a 4-season grilled and even a cold wintery snap won’t stop me from bbqing up some burgers and steaks!

Thank you for walking with me in this wild winter wonderland. 10k steps closer to the hallowed top 200 actifiters of all time and doing well in the deep of winter!

Oh man you are on the north pole!

-20c that's insane, the roads despite all the efforts are still so full of snow... I'd just close myself in the house there lol

Do they put salt on the roads?

Ridiculous isn't it? I think they try not to use salt as it isn't great for the environment and I am not sure it would work at these low temps.

North pole indeed and I have to be outside tomorrow for 6 hours to help with our #winterfest event. Should make for some frozen toes and interesting pictures.

You are in Stratford? I was there once years ago to go to the theater. I remember that it was a lovely place with swans on the lake.
We are within that gray frozen area on the weather map too. You are braver than me... I took a photo today through the window, but I have no intention of going out there,

That's the one! The swans live safely in a little barn thing half a block from the lake and I volunteer to help hold back the big crowds every year when they walk them back to the river.

I go out regularly but bundle up and don't stay outside that long so it is never problem. If you live this far north, you can choose to be happy in with winter or choose to hate it and have the same amount of winter but less happiness. ;)
