Athens - Valencia - Madrid

Yesterday our travel to Athens came to an end. I woke up a few minutes before 7:30 am, the alarm we set to start preparing the luggage. We packed up all our clothes and left the hostel at 8:00.

We went directly to the Syntagma Square, to take a bus to the airport. We passed through Omonia Square, the closest metro station. However, we decided to go on foot, because the Athens underground is overcrowed, can take up to 15 minutes long between trains and we had a bad experience the only time we used it. I stopped for a minute in a kiosk to buy a fridge magnet.

While we were waiting at the queue for buying the tickets the bus departed. Luckily, there was another just 15 minutes after. We took advantage of the wait to have the breakfast we bought the day before (I bought a chocolate milkshake and strawberry biscuits)

The bus line X95 is the cheapest way to get to the airport but not the fastest. It costs 6€ per person, takes 1 hour 20 minutes to arrive and a train passes every 15 minutes. On the other hand, the metro costs 10€ per person, it takes 1 hour and passes every 30 minutes. Taxi costs 30-40 € and reduces the time to 40 minutes.

In the airport we passed several security controls after we arrived to the boarding gate. There is a room for every gate with seats for waiting to enter the plane and a toilet. We entered the waiting room directly, so we didn´t visit the airport shops.

As we were crossing the Mediterranean sea, the pilot told us that the Madrid airport was closed due to drones flying in the airport, and that the two alternative airports asigned were Valencia and Zaragoza. A few minutes later, he confirmed us that we were going to land at Valencia and wait there for a landing permission to Madrid.

The aproximation to Valencia was beatiful, from the cargo port to the entire city to the airport on the western edge of the metropolis. We remained on the plane in land.

After about 20 minutes of flying I realised the plane was doing maneuvers, constantly fixing the route really slowly. Then the pilot told us another plane declared emergency on Barajas airport and our landing permission was delayed another 20 minutes. Later on we discovered it was the Air Canada flight with an engine and one wheel damaged during take off

A spokeswoman with Spain's airport operator, AENA, told the AP that the airline had requested a slot for an emergency landing some 30 minutes after takeoff.

So we finally landed at Madrid at 16:15, with a 2 hour delay. Considering the situation af the destination airport that was a good timing.
