Exploring the Tamar Valley and the Giant Cricket Stumps (My Actifit Report Card: January 19 2020)

We completed our six-day overland hike yesterday morning. After a super-quick swim in Lake St Clair we boarded the boat which took us to the Lake St Clair visitors centre. From there we got the bus to a cafe up the road and the group had lunch together before we were driven to our accommodation in Launceston. We again were lucky to stay with our family friend whose house we stayed at before the trip.

Today we spent a bit of time exploring the Tamar Valley. We drove alongside the Tamar River and then up to Bradys lookout which has stunning views of the area.

We then drove to the very kitsch ‘Swiss’ village of Grindelwald. We had some grub there and a wander around.

The next stop was Longford. We chose to drive there because when we drove through it yesterday on the way back to Launceston we thought it looked like a really nice town. It certainly was very nice. There were a couple of great antique shops. We bought a few things in the second shop including a really cute enamel baking dish for only 10 bucks. Our friend also recommended the grocer in Longford (Hill Street grocer - which originally started in Hobart). We picked up some great stuff from there for dinner and lunch.

For our final stop of the day we made a quick side-trip to Westbury. After we left Longford mrshill asked if there was anything else we wanted to see. I said no but changed my mind when we passed a sign for Westbury which featured a picture of the Giant Cricket Stumps. I didn’t know they existed until then but it was too good an opportunity to pass!

Tonight we’re staying in a caravan park in Latrobe which is a short drive from Devonport where we’re catching the ferry from back to the mainland tomorrow morning.

Did you get a chance to check out the Axeman's Hall of Fame at Latrobe? It covers the history of the sport of competitive Woodchopping. There are also a couple of spots along the river there where you can often see a platypus or two playing.

We didn't go to the axeman’s hall of fame as we were there outside opening hours but we did go for a nice walk along the river.
