Too hot in London | Rain in Leicester: August 28 2019

Picture specially for @nathen007 - they've changed the branding for east midlands trains back to this retro look. I like it, it's reminiscent of the Great Central Railway (now a cycle route in Leicester, but with proper full size steem trains passing each other at Loughborough). Actually, just discovered they've changed the railway provider and the current fleet of diesel HSTs and Bombardier Class 222 Meridian DEMUs is to be replaced by 33 five-car Hitachi 200 km/h electro-diesel trainsets from 2022.
I walked a lot of steps, too.

Thank you - actually a little low for me on a day in London. I usually clock up between 11,000 and 15,000. It was a lovely summer's day and I was taking it easy :)
You must get a fair number of steps in on your walks.

What a great start to the day. I wake up to trains. Not just 'this is a train' but this...

Actually, just discovered they've changed the railway provider and the current fleet of diesel HSTs and Bombardier Class 222 Meridian DEMUs is to be replaced by 33 five-car Hitachi 200 km/h electro-diesel trainsets from 2022.

Beats waking up to a bowl of salty jok and a basket full of laundry!

When Virgin lost their East Coast franchise, and it was replaced by LNER, I hoped they would also go for a classic retro livery, but no. I suppose in some way a blessing and saving the tax payer a fortune, they simply kept the red and white colour scheme and altered the branding slightly.

There is something to be said for the emotional well being attached to travelling by trains that have a certain elegance in their livery though or is this just a fanciful romantic notion?

Virgin had fantastic customer service and lots of freebies in their 1st class lounges and carriages but that garish red and white.....design is important to user experience in all walks of life!

I knew you'd enjoy that 😊
I'm not sure you will like the Hitachi livery, though, it seems to be bright purple.

Yes, I've seen it. The thing about railways though for train buffs is the reminiscing. It takes you back to younger days. For my Dad and Uncle, it was all about BR Steam. For me, it was about the late 70s and early 80s simple blue engines and grey and blue coaches. I follow the modelling forums and generally speaking, youcan tell their ages by what they model!

Having said that, taking my anorak off for a minute, railways and air travel have a certain mystique linked to faraway destinations and travel in general and so those bygone days when such adventures had more of a mystery and evocative allure, need that elegance to perpetuate the narrative. Had Agatha Christie been alive to day, I'm not sure a purple Hitachi multiple unit would have made it into any of her books!

I still enjoy the journey as much as, if not more than the destination!

I agree, I love train stations and airports and, even though I'm now a frequent train traveller, I still enjoy watching the train pulling into the station - it seems full of promise!
Abellio, behind EMR, are offering lots - shorter journey times, more services, better customer experience. Market Harborough, the next mainline station, has had it's platform straightened (a bit strange that it was built with a kink, but perhaps there was an engineering issue at the time which has been resolved since).
Aside from the romance (with which I agree), it would be great to get more people on to trains and off the roads. I'd love to see the prices come down so that taking the train becomes the obvious and easy choice.

One good improvement - free wifi throughout the train, instead of just first class. Not bad connections either.

You know, I've passed the station many times, but never visited - I must put that right and do a post!
