A Split Weekend of College Football

If you live in Michigan it was either a very happy weekend for you or a very sad one.

In what should have been a "cupcake" game, U of M beat Illinois 42 to 25. I am actually shocked that the Ilini put up as many points as they did against the Wolverines.

They haven't been that great this year with a record of 2 -4 and I kind of expected the score of this game to be more like the score of another game that at team from Michigan played this weekend...

I still think that Michigan has some weaknesses on their offensive line and I feel the 42 points they scored is more a testament to Illinois lacking defense than Michigan's offense.

In the third quarter they actually shut out U of M and managed to put up ten points which didn't put them in a horrible position going into the fourth quarter.

Sadly, my Michigan State Spartans had a much worse weekend than the Wolverines. I knew it wasn't going to be a pretty game, but they basically got manhandled by Wisconsin.

That actually isn't a very accurate statement. The first three quarters they were able to hold one even though they played a pretty sloppy and forgettable game.

The quarterback Lewerke just seems to be having an off game which unfortunately seems to happen pretty frequently with the Spartans. I was hoping that bringing in Lombardi would give them the spark they needed but it just wasn't to be.

In fact the first two plays with Lombardi in at QB were something I would expect from a high school team. There seems to come a point in ever Michigan State football season where you never know which team is going to show up for a game. It is usually at that point where you start looking ahead to college basketball season :)

I really thought they would score at least one point, but it just wasn't to be. Losing 17 to 0 going into the fourth quarter the game was still very much within their reach. Sadly, the Badgers put up 21 points in the fourth and basically shut the door on any chance the Spartans had.

If you watch no other Big Ten football games, there are going to be some good ones within the next month that I high encourage you to check out. I think the Michigan/Michigan State game should be pretty good. We have a defense that should be able to stop the U of M offense and if our offense can pull things together I think we can easily get the win.

Also, keep an eye out for the Wisconsin/Ohio State game when it comes up a couple of weeks from now. I have a feeling that is going to be an awesome game between two really great teams. It is definitely going to be a must watch!
