NCAA Mens Hoops 1/24/2020 Recap

Only one upset in NCAA top 25 basketball last night and sadly it was the Michigan State Spartans that suffered the defeat. I didn't get a chance to watch the game because it didn't start until 8:30 so I knew it was going to be a late night if I stayed up for it.

I had already been late getting home due to some work I was doing on the side, so I just didn't feel like watching.

This win moves Indiana into the top 25 and has Michigan State tied with (can you believe) Illinois for the number one spot in the Big Ten.

Michigan and Ohio State only have two wins in the conference which is just insane to me given how well they both started their season. Both of those teams were ranked within the top five in the nation at one point.

Looking at the box score, turnovers were once again an issue with the Spartans. They had 13 vs. 8 from Indiana. If they could have just cut that number by half they would have easily won the game having only lost by four points.

Second attempts at the basket were also something that kept them from winning. They only had five offensive rebounds. That number is much too low at this level. The players should always be following their shot and going in for the rebound in case it doesn't go in.

UConn and Houston was close as I thought it might be. Another four point victory by the home team, this one wasn't an upset though.

Personally, I thought Washington State had a better chance against Colorado. It is too bad that they weren't able to rebound from their overtime loss to Oregon and upset the Buffaloes.

Speaking of Oregon, this is the second overtime game they have played in the past week. On top of that, this one went into double overtime. Having won both of those overtime games (the Washington State game being a much closer score), tells me that the Ducks are definitely working on conditioning and they have either a really deep bench or the stamina to go into extended time with no difficulty.

That could be an important thing to remember come tournament time, assuming they make it (which they probably will).

Only one top 25 game tonight: Marquette/Butler. I want to say this should be an easy win for Butler, but the way this season has been going, who knows! Tons of games being played on Saturday and Sunday, so check back Monday for my recap of the weekend!
