Brazilian Jui Jitsu + Yoga = Active Recovery

Jiu Jitsu is a love of my life and Yoga is becoming essential because of that. So, continuing the theme I started a while ago with the White Belt Curriculum series, I am going to spread some wisdom and active recovery from another friend at the academy.

What I like most about this program, is how he explains things in informal english, gives you details and insight without distracting you, and incredible knowledge of the human body which goes into the routines he specially assembles for us.

Whether you are a martial arts practitioner or not, if you spend 50 minutes on a mat in front of your monitor following along, you will thanks me for it. I am especially thinking of my friend @evecab who is getting back into training and probably has hip and lower back issues to contend with.

Well my youngest son, did Taekwondo for one year. But he decided to stick only to football.
Great exercises for the body, so I kinda regret his decision but we will respect it!

Taekwondo is a legit martial art for sure. This yoga would be great for recovering and strengthening after one of those sessions. Plus, one of the best training partners I have came from a Taekwondo background and prepared him really well.

Football is a flash in the pan during high school/college for almost all. Jiu jitsu can be trained while doing that (talk about building core strength and using leverage!) or afterwards. Never too late to start.

& football causes a lot of sneaky brain damage to anyone who plays with any balls at all. Yoga is the best, jiu jitsu + yoga compliment each other better than any other two exercises I’ve ever tried

Hell yah! Anything with striking slowly chips away at the brain and upper spine. That’s why I like Bjj. Deadly but you can spar at full intensity and not worry too much about your bean.

As long as there is a good relationship with sparring partners BJj is pretty safe. Definitely fun

My middle son practiced karate for a couple years before growing bored of it. The few times I've tried yoga I realized it's not nearly as easy as it looks. I think all of us could stand to carve some time out of our day to keep being healthy.

A few of my dedicated training partners came from many years of karate. I practiced that as a kid as well.

Yoga makes me feel older than I am while doing it, and younger than I am afterward.

I did BJJ for a short time and I remember how much my arms hurt afterwards. I remember it being hard to drive home in my car. I guess it was from people reafing on my arms trying to arm bar me lol. I can see how yoga would be helpful or recovery. Especially if the person is feeling it in their back and hips. Nice share!

Yah. Sore arms in the beginning for me was maintaining a death grip and using all my strength to do anything out of survival. Either that or not tapping til I was hurt a little more out of pride or competitive spirit.

Now it is because of old shoulders and a little hockey elbow coming back to haunt me.

Taking time to stretch afterward and work the yoga becomes more useful as I age and progress for sure.

That is great start. Teaches a lot of the discipline and confidence basics.

If he takes to that for a year, come back and talk to me about jiu jitsu. ;)

Well, I did yoga one time and thought I had popped every muscle in my body so I think I'll have to start from the beginning with a simple sit and reach to touch my toes. Baby steps 😁
