Cycling Speed Record

When I saw the news that British man sets new cycling speed record of more than 174mph my jaw dropped and 174mph is 280.55km/h and that's very fast even for a motor powered motorcycle, not to mention for a bicycle ridden by a human being.

However, things did not happen as I thought it did as Neil Campbell rode a custom bike released from the back of a speeding Porsche. I don't understand how and why but never mind.

The Porsche had a large attachment on the rear which affected its aerodynamics, punching a hole through the air for Campbell to cycle in.
Desperation to break the record meant he ditched a parachute designed to help him to brake quickly before the end of the airfield, because it was causing turbulence.
But he did wear a kangaroo-skin protective suit which inflates in the event of a crash.source

The previous record was 167mph (268.83km/h) and was set by a Dutch in rider in 1995.I can understand how happy the dream was to brake an old record like that. He's not finished with records though as his next plan is to try to reach 220mph next year on a six-mile track at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

It's still strange to see this going on. An entire crew working on breaking a record just to be broken. Of course, they get exposure in the media and the record is tied to his name but still. This is not a competition where you just do your thing and maybe you can break the old record. This is very different. I see no point in this but whatever. They know what they are doing and why.
