Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo apologizes after loss

Same team, same story, different day...  It is pretty funny, I was standing in the grocery store checkout line the other day and the older couple behind @mrsbozz and I commented on the Michigan State Spartans gear we were wearing.

You see, we have a double use for our Spartans gear...

The mascot of the school district that we both work for is the Spartans.  That doesn't mean we aren't Michigan State fans, it just means we get to get some extra use out of our team apparel.

A short time ago we got a cease and desist letter from Michigan State.  Apparently they were afraid people would be confused by our little school district 100 miles give or take NE of East Lansing.

We were able to keep the Spartan mascot, we just had to change our logo.  Thankfully we were able to quickly find one that they approved of and we have moved forward with that.

Anyway, back to the grocery store.  The wife of the older gentleman was commenting on the fact that the game this article refers to took place quite early in the morning our time.  She said that we should be on Maui to watch instead of in the cold Michigan weather we are experiencing.

I was at work when this game too place so I didn't get to watch it and as much as I would love to be on Maui, I don't think I would have wanted to be at this game anyway.

It baffles me, as good as Tom Izzo is, that his teams continue to have trouble with the same issues.  Unfortunately I feel like his apology to the fans is a bit hollow.  I am still a believer in MSU and Izzo, but this is beginning to feel like the same song and dance...

Ranked high early in the season, then turnovers and stupid mistakes bring them down to a point where they barely make it into the big dance.  Finally, they exit the tournament in the first or second round and give their loyal fans nothing but excuses.

I understand there is a lot of youth on this team and new faces, but with the talent level and the amount of time they put into practicing and drilling, they should be better.  No excuses Spartans, show me some results!

I find it weird they would send your little school a cease and desist letter, but i guess its all about the Money and marketing these days

Yeah, it was pretty crazy. I think part of it was brand dilution or something like that. I can't quite remember now. We moved past it.

They enforce their trademarks with a passion. I was at a conference with the their legal team that said just that.

it would be a big problem if all those MSU fans started turning up at your high school for home football games because of the mascot. Good thing they got the courts involved to prevent traffic jams.

That's pretty much exactly what I said. I said, in the fifteen years I have worked here I have never had anyone show up thinking they were at MSU. It was pretty crazy. It made the local newspaper and everything. People couldn't believe how big of a deal was being made about it.

lawyers are fun.... they live in their own world. I had a crazy as hell party guy roomate in college who is now a lawyer... when we talk today, we have nothing in common and he is no longer fun.
