Sources -- Ex-Hornets forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist agrees to join Mavericks

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was the #2 pick in the draft.  He was suppose to be a superstar.  The Charlotte Hornets were excited by that prospect.

Things did not work out so well in Charlotte for Kidd-Gilchrist.  He turned out to be more of a role player than a superstar.  This led to the parting of ways with the team buying out the remainder of his contract.

In the NBA, teams are allowed to do this.  It gives the player a chance to hook up with a playoff bound team while saving the team some money.

The Dallas Mavericks are the recipient of Kidd-Gilchrist's services.
