The ballet dancer who fought to wear brown tights | Michaela DePrince | Rebels | BBC Sport

Michaela Mabinty DePrince, born Mabinty Bangura, is a Sierra Leonean-American ballet dancer. She rose to fame after starring in the documentary First Position in 2011 following her and other young ballet dancers as they prepared to compete at the Youth America Grand Prix. She formerly danced with the Dance Theatre of Harlem as the youngest dancer in the history of the company. Since 2016 Michaela is a goodwill ambassador with the Dutch organisation War Child.

Do you think Michaela is inspiring?

Michaela's passion for ballet was discovered as a war orphan in Sierra Leone when she saw a ballet dancer on the front of a magazine. As one of the only professional black ballet dancers, she is fighting for change so that more young black women are inspired to follow in her footsteps.
