Lunch Ride

I just finished a 4.202km cycling that lasted about 0hh:14mm:54ss !

I just acquired a new watch. It is a Garmin Forerunner 235. I am still learning to use it, but took the opportunity of a shopping trip to test it out. On the way there it went into power saving mode and so I lost that trip, but it did not do this on the way back. Update: I think what happened is I needed to press Start again and so it was not logging the ride out.

It looks like heart rate is another thing you have to pay to see in Strava. I can appreciate they need to make money. Garmin make it on the hardware. £4/month is not too bad really. I was paying something to Endomondo previously and will cancel that.

It is still cold today, but I worked up a sweat. I took off my fleece for the return journey, but kept my gloves on. Nice and sunny though. There's a bit of a hill to get over in Arlesey.

I set up the Garmin app to sync with Strava and it did that fine. I will then sync it to Exhaust to post on Steem. That may get automated eventually. The sole developer is working hard.

This is the first activity you've shared in this distance range! Post a few more, and we'll have some historic data to compare with! Keep getting EXHAUSTED!

I cheaped out and got a fitbit that does't have the heart rate monitor. I kind of wish it did, but that is probably just something I would obsess over :) Nice job on the ride. Hopefully the sleep mode thing doesn't continue to be an issue.

This is a step up from previous device I've had. As it has GPS I don't need my phone to log a run, but I'll still take it when training for something to listen to. I think I just needed to press the button again to prevent the watch going to sleep. At least I didn't miss a run.

That is cool that it has GPS. I know that is a really nice feature to have in some of the more expensive models.

This is a mid-range watch. You can pay a lot more for top of the range or pay the same for a fashion watch that does nothing special.

Yeah, good points. I have never quite understood why people spend so much for watches.

Cool this. I'm just walking each day about 4-6km. I have Xiaomi MiBand4. Is it possible to use it with Exhaust?

I had an older MiBand. I think they only log steps and mine would only do heart rate when specifically prompted. If the watch does not do GPS then you need your phone to do that. As long as you can extract a GPS file you can upload it to Exhaust.

Hm...MiBand4 doesn't have GPS. I usually walk and have an app - MiFit in phone activated. Need to research if mifit files can extract GPS...

I would love to see a review on the watch after you've had some more time testing it out.

I haven't got a smartwatch yet, but my wife loves hers and I would like to not have to run with my phone in the future.

I will review it in time. I have had a Pebble and a Xiaomi watch that showed alerts, but this does a lot more. I may have to tweak it to show less alerts as they can get annoying. Having heart rate data may tell me more about my fitness.

All these features used to be included. Once you paid for something, you got all the features. Now they’ve figured out that selling bits and pieces after the fact is a huge money making thing - thanks partially to Apple and their in-app purchases. Also, subscription models are a thing now. I’m surprised you don’t have to pay something every year to keep using the watch.

At least Strava has a free mode and I notice a lot of users are not paying. It's pretty cheap to get the extras and you can just take some of them. I think lots of services are desperate to get subscribers so they can actually make money. Hardware vendors may do better, but some sell the gadgets cheap in hope of making money later. I think the games console companies do that, but then you have to buy some games.

Love the new piece of tech & looking forward to hearing more about it. I’ve had an apple watch for 3yrs but these things tend to self destruct after a certain amount of time so it will be good to hear what Garmin has to offer

I hope this one will last a while. I know a lot of people use them and I've not heard much about them failing. I'll report when I've had more experience with it.
