My Actifit Report Card: August 27 2019
Originally my sister was going to come over for lunch and to hang out. Since it was a gorgeous day we decided to pick up Dad and have lunch Sullivan's on Castle Island.
My sister and I had fried clams. Dad went with the classic hot dog. After we ate we walked around Fort Independence.
Fort Independence is a granite bastion fort that defended Boston Harbor. In 1634, the British built the first fort on the island. The fort was built with mud walls and cannons were placed on top to defend the City of Boston. The fort has been rebuilt several times since then. I was destroyed by an accidental fire in 1673.
The fort was intentional set on fire by the fleeing British when they evacuated Boston on March 17, 1776 after the 11 month siege of Boston. Evacuation Day is a local holiday in Suffolk County. It was made possible by support of the large Irish American population in living in area. (hum- what possible motive could people of Irish heritage have for finding a historic reason for a holiday on March 17th?) The evacuation of Boston by the British was George Washington's first victory against the British during the Revolutionary War.
The current fort was constructed between 1833 and 1855. In 1962, the Federal government deed the property to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
It is a great place to visit and walk around. I didn't get any photos of the front of the fort, because Dad was getting tired.
I did get some photos of activity in the harbor before we left.
@emergehealthier - great post! I love reading about history like that and seeing photos of historical places. And those fried clams looked fabulous! That's the kind of place I like to go, and sit outside at a picnic table, eating out of cardboard baskets. The pictures of the bay were cool too, especially that clipper ship and the sea gull on the post. I'm glad you all got the enjoy the beautiful day!
Thank you, I love living in Boston and its rich history. It is easy to find historic places to visit. The city and surrounding area are full of hidden in plain sight historical gems.
The clipper ship was beautiful. I found out that for about $30 a person they take you on a tour of the harbor for a couple of hours. It is definitely something I will do in the future.
Great job with the stepping 💪 and another fantastic historical post. Our country also fought hard to kick out the British colonialists😱. Our fight was much later in the 1950's and 60's. That British empire was really ambitious aiming to take over the entire earth😹.
Wishing you an awesome Wednesday ahead. Enjoy your day 👍😁

It is a sad fact that some countries seek to dominate others for economic gain. Historically, it never turns well. You would think by now we would realize that helping each other is more productive to society as a whole. As we become a more globalized society hopefully people will smarten up and work together for the common good of all.
