It's A Small World After All - When Lego Meets Fantasy Football

A few days ago, I was sitting quietly, sorting some parts to add into my Bricklink store inventory, when a little order came through for a minifigure and another piece. Not a particularly unusual occurrance, but this time, it really caught my eye.

There was something about the customer's name and email address that seemed oddly familiar. Was it someone who'd purchased from me in the past? Nope. Bricklink says this is their first order in my store. Then why was this so familiar?

Then it hit me? Around 25 years ago, in my University days, I was involved in an Australian Rules Fantasy Football competition which was run by this guy. We had a draft each season, and every week submitted a team via email. We would watch the games over the weekend, then scour the stats in the newspaper on Monday morning to see how we went.

It was a lot of fun, and whilst Fantasy Sports in Australia have really taken off in recent years, particularly with Aussie Rules, back in the mid-90s this was well ahead of its time.

So 25 years later, something completely unrelated has reconnected me with a fellow sports fan and showed we have something else in common to discuss on those days when our teams aren't going so well.

When travelling in the UK last year the poms would say, "oh, you're an Aussie, do you know my cousin Bob? He moved out there 10 years ago."

Hmm, sure Australia only has 25 million people but no, I don't know Bob.

Seriously though, it's a small place really right? I'm surprised you remember fantasy football guy though...

Given the comp ran for a few years, and involved a fair bit of weekly communication, so I'm not entirely surprised.
