2019 Skate Canada

The event was held at Prospera Place in Kelowna, British Columbia between October 25–27. It's an important event, part of the 2019–20 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, actually it's the second part. Unfortunately I didn't have time to watch the whole competition but saw the winner performances and can say they were good. At this level they must be, obviously.

Alexandra Trusova won the gold at the ladies. She made a mistake at the beginning of her performance and fell but she had the composure to go on and finish her performance. There was a deduction of one point for that mistake but the rest of her performance was good enough to get the gold. The Japanese Rika Kihira came second and took the silver while the South Korean You Young got a bronze medal.

The men's competition was a bit different. The Japanese Yuzuru Hanyu came first, the Canadian Nam Nguyen got the silver but the difference between the two was 59.82 points. This is huge compared to the ladies, where the difference between first and second place was only 10.69. The Japanese Keiji Tanaka came third and took the bronze. The name Nam Nguyen rang a bell and had to check him out. It says he's Canadian but I remembered the German gymnast Marcel Nguyen, who's mother is German and his father is Central Vietnamese. So I checked out Nam Nguyen and found out he's born Canadian but his parents are from Vietnam. I'm learning :)

At Pairs the Russian duo Aleksandra Boikova / Dmitrii Kozlovskii took the gold, the Canadians Kirsten Moore-Towers / Michael Marinaro won silver and the Russian Evgenia Tarasova / Vladimir Morozov won a bronze medal.

The Ice Dance posium looks a bit different as the Canadian Piper Gilles / Paul Poirier came first, the American Madison Hubbell / Zachary Donohue won silver and bronze was given to Lilah Fear / Lewis Gibson representing the United Kingdom.

Russia took two gold medals and a bronze, Japan took one medal of each, Canada took two gold medals and a silver, South Korea a bronze, United Kingdom also a bronze and the US got one silver.

Two Japanese skaters has a minor traffic accident on Tuesday. They has an unofficial training session after which they were heading to their hotel in a taxi that was implicated in a minor road accident. Marin Honda was taken to the hospital as she injured her right shin and head but it was nothing serious, so she could compete. The other skater was Keiji Tanaka, he won third place.
