Joao Felix cost Atletico Madrid €129 million from Benfica. Madrid fans were wondering whether he was worth all that money for just 1 season at Benfica but those who have watch his progression know that €129 million was a bargain. They face Juventus tomorrow night which will arguably catapult Felix to new heights. He seems to revel in the big games and tomorrow night will be the biggest game of his life.
Felix had a great pre season for Madrid but we all know friendly's do not mean that much. It was a sign of things to come though. Atletico fans were eagar to see how the wirey forward would get on in La Liga. They were answered in the first half when Felix went on a solo run to the gasps of the Madrid fans. He got tackled and won a penalty for Atletico. The fans were in awe already. Talks of Cruff came to mind and they immediately nickname him Aladdin. Where did they get this guy and why was he only €129 million.

Joao Felix was born in Viseu in Portugal. His father and mother are school teachers. It wasn't long before his ability started to shine through and he joined the youth academy at Porto. At 13 he moved away from his family. The journey home was far from commutable distance and it took the burden off his mother and father. He felt homesick here and would often beg to come home. His confidence declined and his time at Porto came to an end after reduced game time. Benfica came in for him. The youth team was coached by Renata Paiva who took Joao under his wing and made sure he renewed his love for the game. Paiva could not believe what he was seeing when Joao first took to the pitch. How could Porto let this kid go. He was by far the best player he had ever seen. He could just find space from anywhere and could play in any position up front. He would be gone with the ball before the defenders knew the ball wasn't there anymore. When Bruno Lage became the Benfica coach he decided that he was going to play the youth players from the start. Joao had a couple of starts under the previous manager Vitoria but it was Lage that played him regularly. He started scoring goals for fun and even getting more in assists. He scored a hat-trick against a good Eintracht Frankfurt. The bigger the game the better he played. Some people were comparing him to Kaka and Rui Costa. Benfica slapped a buyout clause for 120 million on him. That did not stop the big clubs from circling and Athetico got their man.

It was an interesting move for Felix as many would have thought he would join Barcelona or teams like Man city. The free flowing football that would suit the youngster. But he decided on Atletico. This team under a great manager Simeone are in transition and Felix can become the fulcrum of the team. He can develop into an all round better player at this club like so many before him. Could Manchester City or Barcelona offer him first team football week in week out? No they could not. But Atletico could. It already looks like to be paying off. Joao needs to be happy plying his trade and it looks like he has settled in well at the club. He comes up against his hero tomorrow night. Ronaldo already knows this guy is special after winning a nations league with Felix. But it has been a short career so far. Make your debut at Benfica, winning the league with them, making his Portuguese debut, winning the nations league and then becoming the third most expensive signing of al time. And he is only 19. Tomorrow night may be another marker in his short career. I cannot wait to see him in action. Here is a ten minute video of some of him in action. It's awesome. I did not know how good he was until I watched it. Enjoy.
