No Big Deal

A bomb map showing every bomb dropped during the Second World War on London. Lets zoom out a little and it is not a big surprise that West Ham has found a bomb next to it's stadium.

This week you may have seen in the news that a German Second World War bomb was found about 200 meters from the West Ham football stadium. This was the former Olympic Stadium which West Ham now use. This is actually very common and nothing out of the ordinary as many bombs still lie buried under ground waiting to be dug up.

What I find amazing is the West Ham game against Arsenal may be in jeopardy (2 weeks time), but the West Ham Tottenham game next Saturday is going ahead. The reason behind this is the bomb squad are only visiting the sight the Monday after the match and will then decide what action to take. Arsenal are only playing there a week later and I am sure the bomb will be moved by then or made safe if it can.

Numbers give you an idea of how many bombs were dropped and this is just the UK and we aren't talking about mainland Europe who also have the same problem. Many didn't explode and just burrowed into the ground.

250 kg bomb similar to the one found next to West Ham's stadium this week.

This is good news really as when the Olympic Stadium was being built they new of an unexploded bomb nearby due to the records that have been kept. The Construction team never found it and now with this one being found it could be the one or maybe not.

There are around 8000 bombs or devices found each year and normally the bigger ones hit the news as evacuations have to take place. Saying this then around 60 of the big bombs are found each year in the UK and normally by construction companies. New stadiums being built just mean more surprises for the builders and they need to be careful.

The list after a quick glance through Google is rather large and many cases we don't hear about or just forget.
2010 three people killed diffusing a second World War bomb after a sports stadiums construction was halted in Germany.
2015 Borrusia Dortmund stadium closed after a Second World War bomb was found below the surface of the car park.
Also in 2015 a bomb was found next door to Wembley stadium causing it to be closed and evacuated.
The biggest find to date and not a big shock either is during the building of the stadium in Volgograd in Russia for the World Cup they found 386 explosive devices as it was partially over the area that the battle of Stalingrad was fought.

There are many more instances of unexploded ordnance found in the building of Stadiums, but this is just to give you an idea of the problems builders have today. Imagine having to check a map first to make sure there are no bombs before you start excavating. That is the standard procedure and part of health and safety, but more like common sense.

I realize that finding these things is a pretty scary thing and all but i tend to look at it from the perspective of that it was dropped from a great height many many many years ago and didn't detonate then.... What are the chances that would happen now? I'm not suggesting that old ordinance has never accidentally been detonated, but seriously. Statistically, what are the chances?

There is still a very high chance. The three mentioned in the post were diffusing and it detonated killing them. Today when you walk around the battlefields you have to stick to the pathways and any dogs have to be on leashes. The ordnance team responsible in France regularly lose members due to the dangers they face. The explosive is still there ,but may have a faulty detonator. Some were definitely duds, but you can't tell.

It is good to hear that not that many people seem to die despite the fact that they find so many of them. Have there been any that actually exploded before they tried to diffuse them? That would be interesting to know.

That's pretty scary, I had no idea there were so many of the things still around. You never run out of things to post about and keep it interesting!

Very informative information and thanks for that.
But is bomb is even there under the earth, is there any chance of explosion??? Because they are there for many years without any damage.

So i dont think there is any reason to be scary
