Not Smart And Just Plain Stupid

Fairly conclusive I would say as that is knocked out/blacked out or whatever you want to call it.

I was reading a report on the Wales vs Croatia football game and saw the highlights where Daniel James gets clattered on the head and drops to the ground. It appears that he lost consciousness fora second or two and remained on the ground being treated by the medical staff for a lengthy period.

Ryan Giggs turned around and said he used his "nous" or brain to sum up the situation so he wouldn't have to go off and be checked for concussion. This is plain dumb and puts the medical team in a situation. Sure no team likes to lose a player to a concussion test in case it comes back positive and they are ruled out for the rest of the game.

A scan showing the damage from a concussion and that isn't even being knocked out which is worse. A concussion is basically the bruising of the brain and is more serious than we might think.

In rugby they have independent doctors who watch for any signs of concussion that may have been missed by using the television monitors. I know for one they would have demanded an immediate test for this incident and there is no ways he would have passed. If you blackout for just a few seconds the effects may only appear the next day and that means a minimum of two weeks out of the game. United wont be happy as extra tests should have been done by now and he shouldn't be allowed to play against Liverpool.

The test is known in the sporting world as the "Ding Dong" test and is fairly basic with questions that you should know like who are you playing and what is your name. The doctors also check to see if your pupils are dilated and if you can focus on something as you can't cheat those tests. The issue with football is your head is part of the body that comes into contact with the ball and if you were concussed and carry on heading the ball who knows what might happen.

I have been knocked out a few times playing rugby and we never had the "ding dong" test then and it was more like a quick sniff of smelling salts and you are good to go. Some players aren't so lucky though and recall a case when a player was knocked out and had a suspected neck injury so was loaded onto a stretcher and moved to another field waiting for the helicopter to arrive. Unlucky for him a ball from another game was kicked and it hit him on the head causing more alarm amongst the medical staff.I have no idea what the outcome was , but it looked serious and any time the medical chopper is called it is a worry.

Advert from South Africa aired before the last World Cup.

Football needs to come up to speed with other sporting codes and independent doctors and not team doctors should be treating players on the field. The problem with football is players fake injury from foul play by rolling around and this has to stop. If a player does that he should be red carded immediately as it is unsportsmanlike behavior and needs to be stamped out. Neymar springs to mind and he needs to grow up as he is a bad example for the youngsters watching.

American football has something similar to ruby now. I was watching a game the other day where they stopped play before the ball was snapped and the officials made a player come off the field because they saw something from the booth and they wanted to check a player out for concussion because of that. I think it is great that they are taking it so seriously. It can have a life long impact on players.
