Before 1958, there was nothing like in-game substitution in the game of football. The only players outside were there in case a player sustained an injury or a player failed to turn up for the kick-off.

For a long time, only one substitute was allowed before it was extended to two and then in 1995, three were introduced which has remained the maximum till date. Before then, each team is allowed to outfield one player and then a goalkeeper.

When the game became more intense and physically demanding as players ended up getting injured during games FIFA had to increase the number of substitutes. Now, there has been speculations that it's possible the number of substitutes is increased to four

Now what happens if there's unlimited sub in football?

If unlimited substitutions are allowed in football it would cease being an endurance sport. It would not only constitute time wasting but would also detract the flow of the game. Even now that only three substitutes are allowed, we can see how some teams sometimes use it to their advantage to waste, so can you now imagine the idea of unlimited substitutions in the game?

The choice of starting team, the those who are outside as substitutes are all part of the game strategy but unlimited substitutions would change significantly if the limit on substitutions were lifted

In a nutshell, football will cease being an endurance game and will become annoying in the case of unlimited substitutions.
