Crazy Small Margins

The pit stop is going to become even more crucial over the next few seasons or lets say after 2021 as Pirelli have been forced by the FIA to make some drastic changes to the performance of the tires. Currently we see drivers driving further and further passed the suggested window of the tires life and that is down to nursing them for as long as possible.

Come 2021 that won't be the case as each tire compind will have a different performance level and drop off immediately afterwards. The soft tyre will be faster but won't last as long so whoever has it on the car needs to make sure they are doing the times required to stay ahead and build up enough time for another pit stop.

The pit crew who are leading the way with record breaking times.

It is suggested that most cars will do between 4 and 5 stops per race after the 2021 regulations are in place. currently we see one or maybe two depending on the teams strategies. If we factor in a minimum of 4 per race then the pit stop teams will need to be on top form. It could make or break the race for certain teams as making up or losing time will be a reality.

Last week we saw Red Bull pull off a 1.8 second pit stop compared to the average of 2.5 -3 seconds per stop. Multiply this by 4 or 5 and they would have gained nearly 6 seconds back on their competitors and that is big time that is going to be hard to catch. More time is going to be spent on perfecting the art of changing tires from next year and expect to see a team get close to 1.6 or 1.5 seconds for a stop. Quite incredible for changing over 4 tires safely.

In days gone by we used to have refuelling being done at the same time and that would just make things too unsafe at these speeds now. I can see more of the athletic types coming into the pit stops as that is what it is going to take. Gone are the days of being a mechanic working at the factory and then practicing an hour a day to try and improve their times. Williams use staff workers as it is seen as a plus getting into the traveling pit crew. Budgets are going to have to be set aside to get specialist teams in for this unique piece of racing madness. Just makes logical sense as think of how much is spent on development just to gain a 1 second advantage around the track.

This change could bring some life back into F1, I just tried to imagine 5 pitstops 🤪 ohh the horror for the crew, and all the calculations they need to do...

It will definitely add something and more drama which will be good. If you look at all the changes the races are going to be much closer as the aero dynamics of the cars have changed for 2021 allowing for easier overtaking removing the dirty air caused by the slip stream. Expect to see loads of new drivers with the licences being handed out to more people.

I was talking to my mom and dad this weekend about racing. It was pretty funny watching them get so animated about it. I might need to try to get into it a little more. I see how great your posts are about formula racing.
