Some Minor Adjustments For 2020 And That Is It.

Same tyres as last season will be used in 2020.

There are some changes regarding the tires for next seasons Grand Prix races which I feel are more fair. Not the tires themselves, but the way they are used in qualifying. If you recall this year whatever tire you qualified on in qualifying 3 you had to start with those tires. If you qualify and make it into round 3 you are given a new set to replace the tire you used. The tires themselves haven't changed though and are the same as what was used in 2019. The only difference this format can change however is if there is rain as everyone will then use the blue wet weather tires..

Pirelli and the FIA along with the teams agreed to keep the tires the same as that means the teams don't have to alter their 2020 race cars to accommodate any changes. They agreed that if the tire changed then the car would have to be altered so keeping it the same before all the changes happen in 2021 made sense. Pirelli have been concentrating on the tires for the 2021 season which has and will take more time to perfect than originally planned. Tire pressure is going to play an important role with the new 18 inch tires for 2021 and that is where they need to concentrate all their efforts right now.

Everyone is going to use the softest compound tire for qualifying as that is the tire chosen by Pirelli and the FIA. Teams can no longer choose to yse another tire and everyone needs to be on the same tires now.If you don't make it into Q3 you keep the tires and aren't given a new set which I think is fair. last season it could actually benefit the teams not making it into the final qualifying as they had basically 3 variations of full sets of new tires to choose from for the race.

The red soft C4 is mandatory for qualifying and you don't want to be using this tire up doing Q1 and Q2 and then missing out on Q3. The C2 and C3 tire is mandatory for the race and all teams need to have a full new set of each variant.

There are 5 compounds for 2020 from a C1 which is the hardest down to a C5 which is the softest. Pirelli have selected the tires for the first 4 races already which wasn't too difficult as they have stuck to the same 3 compounds for these particular race tracks. I think that the top teams will benefit having a new set of softs as that tire will last a few laps longer than a used set and could be used later in the race if needed. The Brazillian Grand Prix was a prime example as Vettel had no soft sets left where Le Clerc still had one set available to him which would have made a massive difference right at the end.

With the tires not playing a huge role as what was first suggested for next season I can see Mercedes and Red Bull being the teams to beat currently. Ferrari admitted this week that the 2019 car they developed was not up to their high standards and will make some bigger changes and upgrades for next season.

That is interesting that they changed the rules like that. It seems like it is going to give the teams a little more flexibility.
