Going Backwards

Reading the news today I came across something that is not only made me mad but it's absurd too. I bet many of us don't think of how life is at the other end of the world, at least it's not something we're concerned daily. That's why news like this come as a shock or just reminds us that what we consider normal may not be normal elsewhere. Evolution may also be different for some countries. Usually evolution is onward, at least that's what is normal, not backwards.

According to Wikipedia, Terengganu is a sultanate and constitutive state of federal Malaysia. Looks like in Terengganu things are going backwards and that is very, very wrong. It may be normal to them but not normal as human rights and freedom is concerned.

Terengganu's female gymnasts are bared from competitions by the state. To make you understand what's behind this story, I need to tell you that 96.9% of the population of Terengganu is Muslim.

Why are these female gymnasts banned from competitions? The government says because of the revealing attire and "indecent" moves. Then as a justification they gave the examples of gymnasts being molested by their coaches.

Whatever dress code they have in mind, they should think of what gymnasts do. You need flexibility for the various routines and these dresses were created in order to make their life easier. These laws and customs are outdated and need to be addressed as there is nothing sexual and it is just a sport.

This mentality need to change once and for all. They should wake up as soon as possible and see things as they are. They need to start making changes and punish those who are really responsible, teach men to act like normal human beings and not like criminals. Dressing women up from head to toes, locking them up for life is not protecting them but taking away their freedom and humiliating them, while those who are acting like animals are running around freely because they are protected.

Farah Ann Abdul Hadi is Malaysian gymnast who qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She's famous in her country, I don't think there are many female gymnasts in Malaysia at that level, so it's understandable if younger girls are looking at her as a role model. It's normal, it happens everywhere. With this decisions they are taking away many young girls dream, maybe the only chance to be appreciated outside their community and I could list many reasons.

There are some interesting comments under the video, worth reading them. I'm not the only one who thinks this is wrong. Very wrong!!!
