A particularly deadly Hash run

avatar

I took a break from "The Hash" for a couple of months. Just like going to the gym or any other exercise regimen, it is really easy to stop going, and very difficult to get back into the swing of things.

Please note: "hash" in this group has nothing to do with the drug

However, I joined the crew yesterday and while I did pretty well, I honestly should do better than I perform considering I am around 20 years younger than most of the people out there.

We had a decent crew of around 25 people in today's relatively cool trek. The area appeared to be relatively flat, which is always a plus, but it didn't stay that way for long.

We found ourselves faced with small hills, which eventually became near ravines that we had to be quite careful when getting to the other side. Hashes rarely take place on roads, so you can expect the elements to be a bit of a factor in how crazy difficult this can all be.

Most of us slow to a walk at the hills and this is because none of us are elite athletes. The motto of the HHH is that we are "drinkers with a running problem" and it shows. But I think it is definitely good for all of us because well, you ever met a hardcore drinker who is like "ok, gonna go run near 8 km in the jungle now!"

That's exactly what we did yesterday. The reason why I say this run is a dangerous one is because of the deceptive nature of some of the trails. There are large stones in the path that can trip you up and at the minimum mess up your ankles when you don't see them coming.

Go ahead, run on this, I dare ya!

A few weeks ago, one of our more established "FRB" (front running bastard) members tripped up on exactly this kind of terrain and busted his head open, it was merely a flesh wound thank goodness but it later involved 16 stitches and quite the impressive loss of blood. I admire this man because despite that, he was back out here yesterday with still-visible scars and was determined to still be one of the front runners. He achieved this goal and was well celebrated at the circle at the end.

Plenty of booze and merriment was had at the end of the run and personally I had 6 beers which almost certainly negated the 862 calories I burned on the run.

I have to say though, that this is my kind of exercise. It is so much more fun than running on a treadmill in the gym and since almost everyone loves a beer in the crew, you are surrounded by people that have achieved balance in the force. We all drink in a rather irresponsible manor, but we all are still very capable of exercise.

The camaraderie is second-to-none as well and in the year I have been a member I have made many life-long friends.

As always, i highly recommend you look to your local area to see if they have a local chapter of Hash House Harriers as this is a global organization that is pretty well-organized.

Happy Hashing and I'll see you at the "on on."

I never heard of this until @starkez told me about that during SteemFest!

we had some people from Taiwan visit us not long ago. When we sit on the ice at the end for our "roasts" of newcomers, all the Taiwanese men pulled their shorts totally off to put their exposed butts on the ice.... lol, apparently that is how they do it in Taiwan.

I think people who run on a treadmill frequently totally miss the point of running. It should be something we enjoy, where we breath fresh air and where we just spend time in the nature.. I also think it's a general thing that people see sport only as something what make them lose weight or give them a great looking body but there is so much more behind it. Cheers

yeah, when you look at our crew there is no denying that not everyone is super healthy, but also there are no people about to pass out from exhaustion. This exercise, even for the people that only walk the trails is super beneficial for all involved. A lot of the people in our crew are in their 70's and have no trouble doing these walks. That, to me, is super impressive.

It's def is impressive. And I absolutely want to be like them at that age and not lying half dead on my sofa and watch TV..

yeah, all of these old boys are pretty switched on. Not only does the run keep 'em physically sharp, but the sessions at the end test your wits because it is very important to be "quick on your toes" in the circle as the insults come fast and furious although it is all meant in jest.

Regular exercise contribute to healthy state of living since many foods we have numbers of fat in them and the desire to watch our weight in order to stay health require enough exercise. Athletics aren't border about this most time because consciously or unconsciously they will find themselves in action. I do like to go to local gym whenever my body ask for it but not something I could wake early in the morning doing.

Damn, I was expecting some ridiculous John Mcafee level story about a harrowing experience involving a poop hammock, murder and taking copious amounts of Hash.

Kind of, only because you're in Thailand though, where I could see hash runs happening and being deadly. GG, either way though, dood.

Haha! What a fun idea gooddream. Is this the group that harrass each other all the time too? It's a great reason to get out there and be active and get a good workout in at the same time and obviously becoming friends is priceless.

Wow, that is a pretty nasty trail. I don't think I could even walk straight on that let alone run. That is awesome that you are getting back into it. I have been trying to get back into some kind of exercise regime lately. I feel I owe it to my wife to be around as long as possible. Plus it would be cool to fit into some new clothes. We will see how I do...

well i lost a ton of weight over the past year and the problem i am facing now is that all of my clothes don't fit me and when i tighten up the belt to get into them, it feels great to have accomplished that but it looks ridiculous.

Yeah, as much as I am not looking forward to spending money on new clothes, I know it is something I need to work towards.
