The Implementation of VAR Made The Football Match Become Uncomfortable

I am not having comfortable to watch the football match on television since the VAR was implemented so far. This may be a personal opinion of mine and I don’t want to force you to justify them. You probably feel more comfortable to enjoy your quality times by watching the football match after the VAR system technology introduced. In English, the VAR stands for Video Assistant Referee. In Indonesian, these words mean there is a Video that can helps the Referee to make a decision in a football match .

There is a video recording of an ongoing match that can be watched by the Referee when he is in doubt for a decision he must be made. There was an incident or the occurrence of a controversial goal that make some players debate him because of his decision before the referee had to reconsider that decision. The implementation of VAR in football matches is still be a long debate among club owners, managers, players and supporters of a football team. I often watch the disappointment of the coach and the players on the pitch when the decision made by the referee after watching the VAR. The decision was changes at once! I wish VAR weren't in football anymore, I said in my mind at the time.

We knew before that the VAR technology was first tried in the Dutch League for the 2012/2013 season. Then the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) submitted to the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in 2014 so that VAR could be tried to be implemented in all official football matches. Finally, IFAB agreed to the proposal of KNVB and the trials of VAR were being implemented since 2016. Since then the VAR had been implemented officially at the World Cup in Russia in 2018 and it had been followed by many other football tournaments such as the European Cup, Asian Cup, and all Football Leagues in the world have been implemented as well.

Since the VAR system was first implemented until now, sometimes I think it is needed but there are also many decisions made by the referee in a match were very disappointing. A Referee often changed his decision after watching the VAR. For this case I am sure that you must be able to imagine a short case study which I illustrated below;

The match between the Team A (the host but this team is a small one) against the Team B (top team of the league) which is still going without a goal or the score is 0-0. The remaining match was only 1 minute. Team B took the turn to do the corner-kick. The ball was kicked by a Team B player, but suddenly the referee blew the whistle when the ball could almost be gored by one of the Team B players. Apparently, the referee saw an error made by one of the Team A players. so that the player fell to the ground. The referee was also looked having a conversation with the officer in charge of VAR during the match. Then the referee run off the field and he watched the video for one minute.

When the referee returned to the field, the referee immediately pointed to the white dot as a sign of a penalty for Team B. What a disaster for Team A. That penalty kick should not have been given by the referee considering the incident that happened was just normal body contact.

Now, I think you can imagine by now how the Team A players would feel, right? An incident like the illustration above is a catastrophe. It suddenly happened one minute before the game ended. The results of the match also turned into disastrous for a small team that was able to draw against a giant team. Team B was able to leave the field to the dressing room with happy laughter. They won that match and the status of the giant team still sticks to them.

With the various other cases that have occurred I have come to a conclusion; VAR makes a football match uncomfortable. The enjoyment of football has turned bland. I understand that no rules are made to satisfy everyone. In all fields, there are times when regulations are drawn up to prevent unexpected labor things from happening. The goal is to make life better. Likewise in football that has implemented the VAR system, there are teams that have benefited, and there are teams that have been disadvantaged.

With the application of the VAR system in football, now the question that remains is whether the existence of VAR can provide justice for the two teams competing on the field?

SAYA sedang tidak nyaman ketika saya menonton sepakbola di Televisi sejak VAR diberlakukan. Ini adalah pendapat pribadi dan saya tidak akan memaksakan Anda untuk membenarkannya. Mungkin saja Anda semakin nyaman menikmati tontonan sepakbola dengan adanya teknologi VAR. Dalam Bahasa Inggris kepanjangan dari VAR itu adalah Video Assistant Referee. Ia mengandung makna Video yang membantu Wasit dalam Bahasa Indonesia.

Adanya rekaman Video potongan pertandingan yang sedang berlandsung yang dapat dilihat seorang Wasit ketika ragu atas sebuah keputusan yang akan dibuat. Adanya insiden atau pun terjadinya gol yang kontroversial yang menuai protes dari tim laawan sehingga wasit harus mempertimbangkan kembali keputusan yang telah diambilnya. Penerapan VAR dalam pertandingan sepakbola masih menjadi perdebatan panjang antara pemilik klub, manajer, para pemain, dan juga pendukung sebuah tim sepakbola. Saya sering melihat adanya kekecewaan dari pelatih dan para pemain di atas lapangan ketika keputusan yang telah dibuat oleh wasit itu berubah karena dia telah melihat VAR. Andai saja VAR tidak ada lagi dalam sepakbola, pikir saya saat itu.

Sebagaimana diketahui bersama, teknologi VAR pertama sekali dicoba di Liga Belanda musim 2012/2013. Lalu Asosiasi Sepakbola Belanda (KNVB) mengajukan kepada Dewan Asosiasi Sepakbola Internasional (IFAB) pada 2014 agar VAR dapat diuji coba pada semua pertandingan sepakbola resmi. Akhirnya IFAB menyetujui permintaan KNVB dan mulai sering melakukan uji coba penerapan VAR sejak 2016. VAR sudah diterapkan di penghelatan Piala Dunia 2018 di Rusia dan sudah diikuti oleh banyak turnamen lain seperti Piala Eropa, Piala Asia, dan semua Liga Sepakbola di dunia.

Sejak pertama kali diterapkan sistem VAR hingga saat ini, terkadang ia memang dibutuhkan namun banyak pula keputusan Wasit dalam sebuah pertandingan sangat mengecewakan. Seorang Wasit kerap merubah keputusannya setelah melihat bantuan dari tayangan VAR. Saya yakin bahwa Anda pasti dapat membayangkan contoh sebuah kasus yang saya ilustrasikan berikut ini;

Pertandingan antara tuan rumah Tim A (tim papan bawah) melawan tamunya yaitu Tim B (tim papan atas) yang masih berlangsung tanpa gol alias 0-0. Sisa pertandingannya hanya 1 menit. Tim B mendapat giliran melakukan tendangan sudut. Bola pun ditendang oleh seorang pemain Tim B, namun tiba-tiba wasit meniup peluit ketika bola hampir dapat ditanduk oleh salah satu pemain Tim B. Ternyata, wasit melihat adanya kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh salah seorang pemain Tim A. Pemain tersebut dianggap mendorong pemain Tim B sehingga pemain itu terjatuh ke tanah. Wasit pun terlihat melakukan percakapan dengan petugas yang mengurus VAR dalam pertandingan tersebut. Lalu wasit belari keluar lapangan dan menonton video itu selama satu menit.

Saat wasit kembali ke lapangan, wasit langsung menunjuk titik putih pertanda tendangan penalti bagi tim B. Sungguh sebuah musibah bagi Tim A. Tendangan penalti itu tidak seharusnya diberikan oleh wasit mengingat insiden yang terjadi tadi hanya kontak badan biasa.

Sekarang, saya rasa Anda sudah dapat membayangkannya sekarang bagaimana perasaan para pemain Tim A, bukan? Kejadian seperti ilustrasi di atas adalah sebuah bencana besar. Ia tiba-tiba terjadi satu menit sebelum laga berakhir. Hasil laga pun berubah menjadi petaka bagi sebuah tim kecil yang sudah mampu menahan imbang sebuah tim raksasa. Tim B pun dapat keluar dari lapangan menuju ruang ganti dengan tawa sumringah. Mereka memenangi laga itu dan status tim raksasa masih tersematkan pada mereka.

Dengan berbagai kasus lain yang telah terjadi membuat saya tiba pada sebuah kesimpulan; VAR membuat sebuah pertandingan sepakbola menjadi tidak nyaman. Kenikmatan sepakbola pun berubah hambar. Saya mengerti bahwa tidak ada peraturan yang dibuat untuk memuaskan semua orang. Dalam semua bidang, ada kalanya peraturan-peraturan disusun untuk menghambat terjadinya hal-hal buruh yang tidak diharapkan. Tujuannya memang untuk membuat tatanan kehidupan semakin baik. Begitu juga dalam sepakbola yang telah menerapkan sistem VAR tersebut, ada tim yang diuntungkan, dan ada pula tim yang dirugikan. Seharusnya, VAR harus dikembangkan menjadi lebih baik ke depannya agar adanya rasa keadilan bagi semua pihak.

Atas penerapan sistem VAR di sepakbola, kini pertanyaan yang tersisa adalah apakah adanya VAR sudah dapat memberikan keadilan bagi kedua tim yang berlaga di atas lapangan?
