Sporting Memories: Adolescence running back to a ball

A few days ago, walking with my little child, I crossed a small square, adjacent to the entrance to the high school that I attended at the age of 14 and it was for us kids of the time, about 25 years ago, the field football par excellence. It is a square of about one hundred square meters of surface on which we could freely run and play with our soccer ball.

Qualche giorno fa, passeggiando con il mio piccolo bambino, ho attraversato una piccola piazza, adiacente l'ingresso della scuola superiore che ho frequentato all'età di 14 anni ed è stato per noi ragazzini dell'epoca, circa 25 anni fa, il campo di calcio per eccellenza. Si tratta di un piazzale di circa un centinaio di metri quadrati di superficie su cui potevamo liberamente correre e giocare con il nostro pallone da calcio.

The field actually presented further obstacles, in addition to the opponents: the presence of pine trees, planted here and there at a distance of about ten meters between them, to which were added five iron benches and, on the side of the field, a kiosk used as a newsagent. I remember well that the owner of the kiosk, after repeated reproaches, lowered the rear shutters every afternoon, in order to prevent the ball from banging against the windows, risking their breaking. Over time, Pino, the owner of the kiosk, became a friend of ours and often cheered on us guys during matches with opposing teams

Il campo in realtà presentava ulteriori ostacoli, oltre agli avversari: la presenza di alberi di pino, piantati qua e là ad una distanza di circa una decina di metri tra loro, a cui si aggiungevano cinque panchine in ferro e, al lato del campo, un chiosco adibito a giornalaio. Ricordo bene che il proprietario del chiosco, dopo ripetuti rimproveri, ogni pomeriggio abbassava le serrande posteriori, al fine di evitare che la palla sbattesse contro le vetrate, rischiando la rottura delle stesse. Nel corso del tempo Pino, il proprietario del chiosco, è diventato un nostro amico e spesso incitava noi ragazzi durante le partite con le squadre avversarie

We spent our summer afternoons and winter weekends running back to a ball, in the same place, for several years. The passion for football has always kept us united and strong, as well as athletically and physically always in excellent physical shape. Being kids and playing for fun, in those days we had a coach, Baldassarre, who volunteered to train us, assigning us custom workouts and providing suggestions for improving our game.

I nostri pomeriggi d'estate e i weekend di quelli invernali li abbiamo trascorsi riconcorrendo una palla, nello stesso posto, per diversi anni. La passione per il calcio ci ha sempre tenuti uniti e forti, oltre che atleticamente e fisicamente sempre in ottima forma fisica. Essendo ragazzini e giocando per divertimento, a quei tempi avevamo un allenatore, Baldassarre, il quale si offrì volontariamente di allenarci, assegnandoci allenamenti personalizzati e fornendo suggerimenti per il miglioramento del nostro gioco.

We thus began to participate in the first tournaments, without any experience in this regard, after having bought the uniforms with our savings. In addition, each game had a cost, that of the rental of the field, in addition to the participation fee. At the time we kids did not have money because objectively we did not use them as we do today, and so we also worked to recover our savings, as the final prizes were also in the form of monetary rewards, in addition to the cup and medal.

Abbiamo così iniziato a partecipare ai primi tornei, privi di qualsiasi esperienza in merito, dopo aver comprato le divise con i nostri risparmi. Inoltre ogni partita aveva un costo, quello dell'affitto del campo, oltre alla quota di partecipazione. All'epoca noi ragazzini non avevamo soldi perché obiettivamente non li utilizzavamo come oggi, e così ci impegnammo anche per recuperare i nostri risparmi, essendo i premi finali anche sotto forma di ricompense monetaria, oltre alla coppa e alla medaglia.

That first tournament of ours we came in third place, with the satisfaction of the medal, the cup and having received back the money spent during the event. After this tournament, we participated in many others, some winning them, others not qualifying. Many years have passed and with university studies our paths have also divided for different reasons. Sport is a unifying element for all young people who decide to be part of it, both at an amateur and professional level. We all dreamed as a child of becoming champions in our discipline but even if none of us have ever reached that competitive level, the happiness of having spent our adolescence in a peaceful and fun way has remained in our minds and hearts, forming a group of guys who were not only teammates but above all life companions.

Quel nostro primo torneo arrivammo al terzo posto, con la soddisfazione della medaglia, della coppa e dell'aver percepito indietro il denaro speso durante l'evento. Dopo questo torneo, abbiamo partecipato a tanti altri, alcuni vincendoli, altri non qualificandoci. Sono trascorsi molti anni e con gli studi universitari le nostre strade si sono divise anche per differenti motivi. Lo sport è un elemento aggregante per tutti i giovani che decidono di farne parte, sia a livello amatoriale e sia a livello professionale. Tutti noi abbiamo sognato da piccolo di diventare dei campioni nella nostra disciplina ma anche se nessuno di noi ha raggiunto mai quel livello agonistico, ci è rimasta nella mente e nel cuore la felicità di aver trascorso la nostra adolescenza in modo sereno e divertente, formando un gruppo di ragazzi che non solo erano compagni di squadra ma soprattutto compagni di vita.
