Tokyo Olympics - India's Performance - Diminished Medal Prospects Amid The Usual Silver Lines

Hello Sports Lovers,

I wrote this blog just before the Tokyo Olympics started with details of the medal prospects for India.

Although it's too early as we are just into Sixth day today, but I thought of reviewing some of those prospects thru this blog with regards to their performance.

Archery - Deepika Kumari:

Deepika Kumari, being the World number 1 in Archery, a lot is expected from her not just in individual women's singles, but also in mixed doubles as well as other team events.

So, far it was a mixed performance from her as she failed to go past Koreans in the mixed and team events.

However, she is still having a chance in women's singles as she reached the Round of 16 by winning back to matches today.

She might go thru round of 16, but may face An San, the number 1 Korean in Quarterfinals and if she can get past her, she will be a serious contender for a medal.

From her past performances, we can see that, she never got past Koreans and we hope this time she proves those stats wrong.

Badminton - PV Sindhu:

PV Sindhu has been in good form as she won both the group stage matches and she will be playing Mia Blichfeldt from Denmark in the elimination round today and the road ahead for her is not as easy one as she will be running into 12th seed Kim Ga-eun from Korea or 4th seed Akane Yamaguchi from host country Japan in the Quarterfinals.

Let's hope she gets past elimination round and the quarterfinals for chance to win one of the 3 medals.

Boxing - Mary Kom:

Mary Kom started off well winning her round 32 match with a margin of 4-1 in her favor and will be facing Ingrit Valencia from Colombia later today in round of 16 for a place in Quarterfinal.

She is regarded as a great medal hope and she needs to win 2 more matches for a confirmed medal.

Shooting - Elavenil Valarivan

Current World number 1 in 10 meter riffle event, she couldn't go past qualifiers in individual as well as mixed 10m air riffle events and for that matter, no shooter has been able to win a medal in this Olympics and shooting, which was regarded to bring few medals, is now coming back without any medals.

With just men's and women's trap events along with 50 m riffle events remaining, Elavenil will be out of medals and she is still very young and hopefully, she utilizes this experience to comeback better in Paris Olympics.

Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary and others regarded as possible medal winners for India, but haven't been able to move past qualifications in most of the events.

Weightlifting - Mirabai Chanu:

Well, she has been a revelation and is the winner of First and the only medal so far for India as she won a Silver medal in 49 KG weightlifting event.

It is notable that, for the First time, India won a medal on the First day of an Olympics and Mirabai was responsible for that.

Wishing her best in the upcoming events before she starts preparing for Paris Olympics.

Well these were the medal hopes we discussed and apart from Elavenil Valarivan, all others mentioned above are still with a chance to win a medal for India.

The others who are yet to compete from that list with the link I shared are, Neeraj Chopra participating in Javelin throw, Amit Panghal in Boxing and Vinesh Phogat in wrestling.

The other names we can discuss here who are yet to participate are: Bhajrang Punia in wrestling, P Rani and Lovlina Borgohainin Boxing as both are just a round away from confirmed medal and ofcourse, the men's Hockey team, which has been playing well so far in the group stage.

Boxing and wrestling are 2 events where, still multiple medals are expected as most of the boxers will be action in the next 2-3 days and 2 rounds wins from here will give them an assured medal upon reaching semifinal.

Isn't it irony that, most of the names I discussed here are about women as they are the achievers and medal winners for India in the past 2 3 Olympics including this edition as well as Mirabai has been the lone medal winner and it's a lady again!!!!

Shooting, Tennis, Badminton and Table Tennis have been a big letdown although PV Sindhu is still going strong and usual medal winning events like Boxing and Wrestling and Hockey are the remaining best chance for India.

Thanks for reading this and do share your opinions and your medal hopes from your country as well for us to read.

Thanks and have a great Thursday :)

All the members of each country hope that their athletes win the gold medal. Just as you dear friend expect an excellent performance from your Indian participants. We also have our hopes pinned on Venezuelan athletes. We hope that our Yulimar Rojas in Athletics, Daniel Ders in BMX and Antonio Diaz in Karate will give us the joy of a golden one. Julio Mayora already gave us a silver one. Greetings brother @coolguy123 and good luck to your Indian athletes.
