Welcome, thanks for your comments and upvote on my first edition of did you know. You are all appreciated.

Wrestling has been among the sports that has made our childhood a lifely one. If we are asked that what do we know about wrestling, most of us will say it is a combat between 2 or more characters in a ring or on a wrestling ground. Well there is more we don't know about wrestling.

DID YOU KNOW THAT

💡Wrestling is considered the oldest sport in the world, with proves drawn from the famous cave paintings in Lascaux, France, dating back to 15,300 years ago. Paintings with illustrated wresters have also been found in caves all over the world, from 7000 BC in Mongolia, from 6000 BC in Libya and in prehistoric caves in Japan.

💡Wrestling is one of the original sports in the ancient Olympic Games in Greece, dating back to 776 B.C.

💡The modern history of wrestling came to popularity in the 19th century with 3 main styles of wrestling.

  1. Greco-Roman wrestling of the European continent
  2. Freestyle wrestling of the Great Britain
  3. Collegiate wrestling of the United State.

Greco-Roman wrestling
This style of wrestling forbids holds or grabs below the waist, which is the main feature that differentiates it from other styles of wrestling, It was contested at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and it has been included in every edition of the summer Olympics held since 1904 till date.

Freestyle wrestling
Freestyle wrestling has its greatest origins in catch-as-catch-can wrestling, this means the ultimate goal is to throw and pin the opponent to the combat mat, which results in an immediate win. It is the second style of wrestling contested in the modern Olympics game till date.

Collegiate wrestling
This style of wrestling also known as folkstyle wrestling, is a form of wrestling practised by men at the college and university level in the United States. Like freestyle wrestling, it also allows fighters to grab opponent from below the waist level.

💡Freestyle wrestling was first introduced to the Olympics at the 1904 games in Saint Louis. Americans won the gold, silver, and bronze awards in all the seven freestyle wrestling events recorded that year.

💡The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), recommended the dropping of wrestling as a sport from the 2020 Olympic Games, but the decision was later reversed.

💡The famous World Wrestling Entertainment, inc.(WWE) was first established with the name Titan Sport, inc. in the year 1982. Titan was renamed World Wrestling Federation, inc.(WWF) in the year 1998 before it was finally renamed to what we all know today, World Wrestling Entertainment, inc. in the year 1999.

💡 WWE shows are not real contests, but purely entertainment-based performance theater, it features storyline-driven, scripted, and partially choreographed matches. Although most times matches involves moves that can put performers at risk of getting injured and loosing their lives, if not performed correctly.

💡As at 2020, Brock Lesnar was the highest paid wrestler in the WWE with a salary of $12 million. He has won the WWE Championship and also the UFC Heavyweight Championship, making him the only individual in the history of WWE and the UFC to hold world titles from both promotion sports company.

💡James Ellsworth is the weakest performer WWE has ever seen. He was considered too weak for men’s division and was moved to women’s department, and still got defeated in any inter-gender match he did participate in.

💡The United States has won 129 medals in wrestling at the Olympics games, this made wrestling the 4th ranked among all U.S. sports programmes in the Olympics.

💡Wrestling teaches values that lasts a lifetime, expecially when one starts at a tender age. These values goes far beyond winning or losing. Among other values that wrestling adds to a wrestler, it teaches discipline, self-confidence, endurance, mental toughness, teamwork, independence, self-defence and so on....

Most of us doesn't even know that wrestling is considered to be a sport, if you don't know, NOW YOU KNOW.
