Barcelona Shambles

Sport should not be this complicated as it is about passion and enjoyment. When you have individuals who have ulterior motives then this sort of thing happens.

Last night the President of Barcelona Football Club and the entire board resigned as their position was untenable. They were doing more harm than good and the sooner they are out the sooner the repair work can happen. It looks like whoever takes over the reigns has their work cut out as they have left a shambles to fix and a club to rebuild. Whoever takes over next will have the post Messi era to deal with which won't be easy as he has been their talisman for so long.

16 250 votes were required to oust the President and Bartomeu received 20 687 which was damning enough not to hold off until March and resign immediately. During his tenure of nearly 7 years he has seen the club win La Liga 4 times and the Champions League once in 2014/2015. The club expected much more and was part of his downfall.

The finances don't look very healthy as it is reported they are in debt to the tune of $500 Million. What gets me is how is a club allowed to buy players and carry on in the transfer market when clearly they are in financial trouble. What is scary is that this club reportedly was the first club to earn more than €800m in revenue for 23 consecutive seasons. One would ask where is that money now then for them to be in so much debt.

The financial fair play system that FIFA put in place to protect clubs from over spending and getting into debt somehow has been side stepped yet again. The FIFA system allowed clubs to purchase players from the clubs profits and quite clearly Barcelona has had no profit as it is tied up in paying back the debt. How can you spend more than you are earning?

The one firing shot he claimed on the day he resigned is the fact that the board and himself had agreed for the club to join the new proposed Super League. This is a new League taking what would be the biggest clubs out of their home Leagues across Europe and creating a new league. A bit like a Champions League but a normal league like the Premiership. This would kill football in my opinion as it is saving themselves and sacrificing the rest.

His statement means very little though as the new board and President will have to deal with that as whatever they agreed is null and void. I am not a fan of the proposed new League as it is leaving the other teams in their country high and dry. If this is UEFA's brain wave then they have a lot of explaining and answering to do.
